Windows or Mac and Real Estate

Okay, so you've seen these guys in the Apple Mac commercials, right?

The ads are well done.  They're catchy and they typically hold my attention.  I think that whoever conceived the concept hit an out of the ballpark home run in getting the message out about how "cool", practical and better the MAC is over the PC.

Since I'm hearing about how stable the MAC is and now that I'm convinced that they're here to stay, I'm ready to buy!  So off I trotted to my local Best Buy this past weekend to check them out.

Yep they're cool.  I like what I see.  But there's only one problem.  Our local MLS website is NOT compatible with the MAC platform.  When I called them, they told me that there are NO plans to make the software compatible either.  Hmmm.

Okay, time for a "work around."  There's got to be someway to make this work, right?

The Best Buy Geek Squad guy told me that there is an Internet Explorer program that was made just for the MAC and maybe that would work.  He loaded it on the computer and let me try it out.  Excellent!  Program loads.  Click on the icon.  Go the website.  Website opens the front page and looks good.  Log in.  Wait...it's thinking about it....wait....maybe....screen opens to....garble.  UGH!

Let me ask a couple of questions here...

First of all, anyone out there in AR land got an answer to getting unfriendly websites to work on the MAC?

We're a pretty good lookin' group!Second.  I'm a Boomer.  While it isn't my goal to look and act like my 20 year old, I can still recognize the younger generation's contribution to technology and I can capitalize on it.  It amazes me how many people I run into in real estate who are ignorant or uninformed or even completely closed to the idea of blogging, using a smart phone and developing an on line presence.  I have quickly become the "go to" guy in our office to fix minor computer questions and to help other agents learn their way around the Internet and on line tools.

Wow!  Folks, the world is changing - well you already know that since you're saavy enough to be on AR, right?!  When we embrace technology we automatically give ourselves an edge over so many of our competitors.  And as you well know, having that edge is huge in this market!

If you're a Boomer quit moaning about how things used to be and get out there and be smart!  Folks we either adapt and change and get better or we become irrelevant!

How about a practical application?

If you are not in touch with technology, go take a class at your local community college!  You'll be amazed what awaits you.  AND you'll be right in the middle of a bunch of people you don't know.  Think about that...in the middle of a bunch of people I don't know.  Hmmm, what might that mean for me?Read the Book!

Read the book, The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell.  It will explain to you why certain things go big in a society while others languish.  If you don't understand why tattoos are huge, then you need to read this book.  And if you don't understand what tattoos being huge has to do with marketing your real estate business, especially read the book!

Know your audience.  If you're a Boomer and you work with Boomers, then you probably already know how and what to do.  However, if you're a Boomer and you want to work with the up and coming group of people, you're gonna have to do it differently.  THEY ARE NOT LIKE US.  However, the good news is that they're easy and fun to work with when you know learn how to get to them.  Go learn how!

Finally, go find someone to mentor.  It will make you better at what you do.  Remember, if you aren't growing and learning everyday, then you will soon be left behind.

My motto is lead, follow or get out of the way.

I want to lead.  How about you?

I love MACs also but I am in the same situation as you are.   The MLS I am with will only work with IE.  I will be watching your post for other answers but the only solution I see so far is to buy a MAC and install Windows on it also.  Then you can either choose to work on the MAC or dual boot to Windows.  Not the greatest solution but the only one I have seen so far.

I have heard from computer hardware guys that MAC's quality has decreased and they are getting more complaints with them now.

A MAC is a doubly priced PC. In fact you could build your own MAC with internal components that were faster than the ones they have displayed for half the price. They use PC parts now and the internals are ok but nothing that spectacular for how much they are. A similarly priced PC would blow the doors off the MAC which they dont tell you.

If you like spending 2x as much for a computer that has less functionality then by all means. Sure some of the programs I have heard work better. But you have to learn a new OS and unless you are doing constant film editing (which I have heard is about the only truly good thing on a MAC) then there is no point in having one.

A Mac is NOT a doubly priced PC.  If you compare apples to apples (no pun intended) and look at what is INCLUDED on Macs (lots of free and GREAT software) vs. what is included on PCs (nothing but a bunch of trial software), add in the fact that you get NO VIRUSES, NO SPYWARE, NO ADWARE, and you don't have to buy any anti virus protection because there ARE no viruses, plus the fact that it is intuitive and works right out of the box (true plug and play).....  You'll find the Mac a great value.  I have had 25 over the past 25 years.  I've had virtually NO problems, and if you do, there are English speaking, very helpful people to work with you at any Apple store or on the phone.... without waiting for 90 minutes and trying to understand a foreign accent....

The share of Macs has increased substantially in the past two years.  If you've got an iPhone you are already probably aware of the intuitive nature of the Mac.  Same thing, just on a larger scale!  It's easy to use, and makes SENSE.

There are VERY few websites anymore that are Internet Exploder ONLY sites, as most web developers know that's NOT a great idea.  You can run Windows at the same time on your Mac if you do have those issues, but they are so infrequent.  I'm finding many MLS systems (usually the ones that are only IE) are now changing over to become Mac compatible... ours is as we speak.  But I know many agents who have been accessing it in the past using Parallels/ Windows on a Mac.

Most people who are down on Macs have NEVER used one.  Try it... you'll like the experience.

Using a Mac helps you be productive and get your work done.  Using Windows gets in the WAY of your productivity and getting your work done.  It's just if that's all you know... you think THAT'S how computers are supposed to be!  Why do you think most Mac people LOVE their computers!  Because it makes computing and work a pleasant experience... not a hassle.

I went to the "dark side" when I got into real estate. Why give up the ease of use, especially the ability to work with graphics, for a PC? So I could access the MLS. Ours now has a workaround, but I am longing for the day when I can run both systems on a single Mac, and use the PC side just when I have to! Can you tell that there is a deep love for Macs within?

Great Blog Bob. I seriously considered investing in the Mac but for some of the same concerns you are dealing with, I opted to stay PC  -  at least for now.

Security on a MAC is a myth. Sorry but it's true. The reason there aren't viruses and general security intrusions etc on MACs is because so few people use them! It's true of Linux users as well. People who hack and make viruses get more bang for their buck focusing on pcs. That's the truth. It's just a matter of time. Once they get more popular the first thing you will hear is "I thought I was safe because I bought a MAC!"

Want free software for a pc? Why does a Mac only come with free software? That's not true either! You can get zillions of free stuff for a pc, MUCH more than you can for a MAC. Ever heard of Google? They make a whole software set for windows pcs that's free. Not to mention things like openoffice.org. Sure a MAC comes with a nice free set of tools but MOST of the GOOD MAC software isn't free. YUP I said it. You do not get it free and many of it costs triple what equivalent windows software would cost. Why? Because again so few people use MACS that it costs more to produce this kind of software.

I am not saying I don't like MACS in fact I think they are pretty cool. So are IPods. But I bought a generic MP3 player and I have more functionality and it costs less and there are no restrictions on where I get the songs from. The same holds true for MACS... They are shiny and look great but they aren't always as great as everyone says.
