*VOTE* Are You Registered?

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise.

-Maya Angelou (excerpt from Still I Rise)

I first registered to vote in Corinth, Mississippi in 1988 when I turned 18...go ahead, do the math, I'll wait...finished? Okay good. As I was saying, because my birthday is in late September, I barely made the state's thirty day advance registration requirement to vote in that year's presidential election. In case you forgot, that was the Dukakis/Bentsen versus Bush/Quayle election. Of course we all know how that election turned out. I have voted in every November election (and some not in November) since then. I have voted in Florida, Georgia, and now I will be voting in Tennessee!

Early on in my life the duty of voting was pressed firmly into my character. The priviledge of be allowed to vote was always contrasted against the oppressiveness of the Soviet Union. It was always impressed upon me that if people had a voice and a choice, they would throw off the shackles of oppression. As time has proven, that is exactly what has happened in many of the former Soviet republics, South Africa, and the Palestinian State. Self determination is the fundamental basis of any free person.

This week the Democratic National Convetion is happening in Denver. America is witnessing living history with the presumptive nomination of Barack Obama as the presidential candidate from one of the two major parties. Next week will see the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Then there will be the intervening couple of months until the general election on Tuesday, November 4th.

Are you registered to vote? And if you are registered to vote, will you actually vote? What about your relocation clients that you have helped? This is a perfect opportunity to reach out to them with important information on registering to vote in their new city! Dropping a "Thinking of You" card in the mail with the info on how to register along with a couple of your business cards might be a welcome thing. Maybe an e-mail is more your style; it certainly is cheaper and allows you to place relevant hyperlinks! This is a good occasion to get back in touch with those past clients. One cautionary note, I would be very wary of including any propaganda for either party or ballot initiative.

Rich, first I am registered to vote.  That said, it amazes me that most of those who complain about the direction of our country either are not registered or are simply too lazy to exercise their right to vote.

Tim and Pam - I agree 100%. Many throughout history, even recent history have been jailed or worse, struggling for the rights so many take for granted.

Rich, my feelings to election is quite simple. if you do not like who gets elected and you did not vote, then keep your mouth shut because you did nothing to change it.

Danny - I agree that you must participate by voting to be taken seriously.
