Football and lessons of doing business!

By
Title Insurance with Bell Title /Triserv LLC

Good afternoon my friends!

This morning I was having coffee with my father and of course with it being the symbolic beginning of fall this weekend and the celebrated college football season, he and I were waxing opinions of all sorts about the upcoming season.

We segued into a discussion of how a certain business philosophy recently got his attention. It was addressing the concept of each individual in an organization and how they are focused on his or her responsibilities, how ever small and did nothing else. They only concentrated on one or maybe 2 things. So there was no multi tasking or doing any kind of double duty. And if every person in the organization applied this focused principal, then the organization as a whole could achieve its greater objective. Sort of the whole is the sum of all it parts.

Well that led us back full circle to football and the use of sports analogy in business. Each individual, all 11 players on the field are critical to the team and their performance as a single unit with a singular purpose. The offense has the objective of getting to the end zone and scoring. The defense is there to stop them. No one individual is more important than anyone else on the field. The guard has a job and that is to block the man in front of him and make a path for the running back or create a wall with the other members on the line to protect the quarterback. When any one of those linemen or other players misses their assignment, then a critical piece of the armor is missing and the team falters. It is a brilliant, almost poetic design. A beautifully choreographed movement of sheer willpower. Each individual operating as a single unit for the overall good of the whole.

Teamwork and collaberation /cooperation at it finest!

Business should be no different. We build relationships based on our ability to perform our specific areas of expertise. The real estate agent helps their buyer or seller. The appraiser generates a professionally crafter work of art based on certain guidelines. The lender / loan officer brings the proper financing resources to the equation and help the buyer get the money they need to purchase the house. The inspection company gives an adequate assessment and quality of the home. The title company prepares the legal information, insures the deed of trust and coordinates the closing of the loan and the proper legal transfer of the property. All these professionals provide a valuable service that makes for a smooth and seamless transaction. When one either misses their assignment, does not communicate clearly or somehow gets in the way of the others, the rest of the transaction is jeopardized. It is critical for each person to perform their job with perfect execution every time.

When it done correctly, it is a thing of beauty and the winner at the end of the game is the borrower. That is what makes each of our jobs so enjoyable and so rewarding!

Keep up the good work. Build your relationships. Trust that they know what they are doing and stay out of the way. It will yield fantastic results and help you continue to build your efforts.

Have a great weekend and Stay sharp!

Bo...

I love sports analogies and football is one of the best! One missed block can lead to disaster. Everyone must take care of their assignments or the teams fails. Good post!

Each person doing their part, and each person trusting that the others are doing their part. It helps with a good feedback system to keep all informed that the processes are moving along.

BO - One of the reasons that I like to recommend the other professionals in the transaction is because I already know what to expect from them, and I know that we can work together.  Whenever a new "player" is introduced, there is always the chance for miscommunication.

Hi Bo.  Great post.  As a former head scholastic coach I can relate to the sport analogies well.  As a coach we stress team work, communication, cooperation, spirit, enthusiasm, and more.  We all hve a goal to reach and we can best do that by working together.

Bo, there is a certain element that is there when you get to team up with people that you know and trust.

Bo, being a huge 49er, Raider, and NFL fan I loved this post. For me I believe it's also the comraderie(sp) of working together with peers and affiliates, no matter the industry, that makes for satisfaction. Working a project to completion and to perfection is game planning, execution, and then coming through under pressure. Nice touch Bo!
