Marketing Plans: Does Size Really Matter?

By
Home Stager with Staging Diva / Six Elements Inc.

marketing planI'm a firm believer in the old adage that "failing to plan is planning to fail," but I'm also not from the school of thought that believes you need a full-blown multi-page marketing plan to succeed, especially if you run your own business.

And I say this as someone with an MBA in Marketing who used to get paid many thousands of dollars to write marketing plans for companies.

I've been an entrepreneur since 1989 and I've always found that the longer the plan I write for myself, the less likely I am to follow it.

Part of why I've chosen to be my own boss all these years is the creative energy and inspiration that comes from being able to act on my ideas without sitting around analyzing them to death.

A one page plan gets me far closer to my goals than a big report ever will, otherwise I just suck all the joy out of my ideas before I actually act on them.

So with the fall real estate market getting underway in the next week or so, whether you're a real estate agent or a home stager, I think it's important to spend focused time thinking about your business. I begin with a huge sheet of paper and start by "mind mapping" and brainstorming various ideas. I don't sit at a computer to do this, somehow doing it by hand on paper is more conducive to idea generation. After much thought and brainstorming by myself, I do make a list of marketing goals along with a list of specific steps I'll take to reach those goals.

I find the more specific I am, the better. I also keep it simple so that I will take action rather than feeling overwhelmed.

Another point: Try not to do what you've always done (especially if you're expecting better results than you've had before). And don't just do what you see everyone else doing. Step outside the box and challenge yourself to break from the pack, that where the real rewards are.

So how big is your plan? How do you go about tackling the process?

I think, large or small, you need a marketing plan and the motivation to do the job. I think if you are smaller, it can be less elaborate than Microsoft, for example.

I like your thinking and approach. Simplicity is key as is clarity and doable, realistic action steps.

Debra, I'm with you. I do find that using pen and paper boosts my creativity. You asked for tips on marketing plans - I think it is important to focus on three marketing activities that you find easy to implement (or can hire someone else to do for you).

DEBRA - I like the minimalist approach.  Sometimes, we get so bogged down with too many ideas, that it becomes overwhelming and none of them get implemented.

I totally agree that it doesn't have to be massive or complex. For me, a desk calendar (a big one) works well but I have to agree planning is my challenge.

I've done it both ways and can attest that having the roadmap (business plan) makes a huge difference for me.

It's also important to not over-plan, or to leave "white space" for things that crop up....

Debra, I enjoyed reading your post.  It is good to have a plan to follow.  In my various careers, I never had to have a marketing plan.  Now as a realtor, I realize I should have one and have realistic goals to work for.

Plan but keep it simple, when it gets too involved, it becomes overwhelming.

Debra, I agree with you - writing it by hand and keeping it to one or two pages works for me.

Debra,

I am SO on board with what you say...I have actually spent the last two weeks developing a marketing plan that exceeds any that I have employed to date.  I am already starting to see results and feel that I have finally found a 'plan' that works for me!

Debra,

Great advice.  I think that so many get overwhelmed by just the thought of creating a business pan and what it takes that they don't do one at all.  Not a good thing!

Thanks everyone for your comments. I thought of another suggestion to add to this, decidedly low tech I admit:

Take your one page plan and tape it to the wall beside your desk so you won't forget about it. If you're a visual person like I am, you might find that as soon as you stick something in a file, it's the last time you'll ever look at it.

Debra - I have had "update my plan" on my list of things to do for 2 months now.  You mention some great points - for me - a plan for a day works best - bite size pieces from the master plan. When I get things down on paper listing action items for the day - 99.9% of the time I will get them all done!  The list that sits on my desktop - does just that - sits on my desktop. Once an item is extracted from that list to a daily action - it is done. It is clearly time for me to move "update my plan" to my daily action plan. Thanks for the nudge.

Wonderful ideas.. My plan is about 2 pages.. I would love to be able to have it all on just 1 page.. Who knows with the ideas you've shared that might be possible now.

Another well written blog Debra -- it's easy to see why you are so successful.  As someone who has managed teams of individuals and multi-million dollar projects in a former career, I could not agree with you more.  I find, I can prioritize on a post-it (large size :-) or one page of paper, and start attacking them, and I'm finished before I would have even completed an entire comprehensive plan.  Perhaps entrepeneurs are doers by nature, and while planning is important, staying focused and seeing incremental measurable results is even more important.
