Just so You Know, My GROCERY STORE Marketing was a real FLOP

By
Mortgage and Lending with Guaranteed Home Mortgage Company, Inc.

About 6 months ago I gave a shout out to AR friends and their thoughts on Grocery Store advertising. Many said not to do it and some said go for it. I did a big banner ad in the entrance to Kroger ( a local grocer here in MI). The cost was $750, and I figured the exposure couldn't hurt.

Unfortunately, no leads at all. I am surprised. It runs until October, but my faith has definetly wained. So I don't really advise this as a marketing tool with benefits, only cost. Maybe my ad wasn't catchy enough, who knows. Major bummer!

We have an agent in our community who has plastered his face and name on everything that sits still for a minute LOL.  I don't know if it's helped him any...I am a low cost referral kind of girl! BUT hey at least you tried and NOW you KNOW!

All the Best!

Julie, Sorry to hear it didn't work out and feel timing is what it's all about. I look at my local market and see hardly nothing moving, so why spend the money at this time. I hope a client down the road remembers your name for future business.

Hey Julie!

I left a comment for you on my blog regarding your question.  I just read your blog on the grocery store marketing.  I'm not surprised it didn't bring in clients--you missed your target audience.  That's why I think getting an audience to come to you (it's like the BEST dream!) happens when you do an opt in page on your web site.  Imagine, they find YOU!

  • GIVE THEM SOMETHING FREE!!!
  • SOMETHING OF VALUE!
  • MAKE IT DOWNLOADABLE SO YOU HAVE NO COSTS!

Place your ad in the local papers offering your FREE report when they go to your website.  BINGO--no body goes to your website for a report  on let's say 'HOME ANALYSIS' unless they are a WARM--maybe even a RED HOT lead!

Remember, the money is all in the RELATIONSHIPS you develop!

Best wishes!

Yeah, I've heard this is great for the "celebrity" aspect of being an agent but that it does very little to generate new business.  People know what you do for a living when you walk into the store or the school, but they don't necessarily think of you when it comes time to hire an agent!  Sorry it didn't work!

Kathy, I know I have seen the ads on the carts, but I never wrote anything down such as a phone number even so as a consumer, I don't think its very effective.

Sherri, I had a 2ft x 2ft ad right in the entrance, image and company name have been exposed I guess but I am glad you declined, it is just too risky. I think you are right that it takes more time.

Shane, your right, I don't regret trying it out. I really wanted to get my image and company out there, so many people saw it at least.

Thanks for the comments!!

Hi Kristin, I do have the Free Reports on my website, you click a link and it sends me an email. I never thought to place an ad in the newspaper or anywhere before though. So thanks for the great tip. Do you get alot of leads from your web site?

Julie,

I get almost 100% of my business from free website give aways and local networking organizations!  It works GREAT!  Just make sure you over deliver on what you give away for FREE--potential customers then think, "WOW, look what shd did for me for absolutely nothing--imagine what she'd do for me if I hired her!"

And, the next thing I'd ask you is then what are you DOING with those email addresses?  Are you using them to your best advantage????  Are you offering them more free information?  Are you building your relationship?  They are your gold mine.  They have SELF-IDENTIFIED as a hot lead!  Don't drop the ball--the money is in the FOLLOW UP!

You go girl!

I think if you are really well known is a small area near the store you can use it to reinforce your brand but nobody is going to call you because your face is on a shopping cart. If I had spent $750 on Google PPC I would have 100 to 150 prospects.

Julie,  There is an agent in NY who has built her business prospecting people in the grocery store.  She doesn't do conventional prospecting and she makes a ton of money.  I believe she works for Prudential and her name is Kathleen Kennedy (I think)

I'm not sure if that approach is very effective, but worth a try, for sure! Hope it wasn't too expensive!

The grocery store is a great place for Branding.  In 6 months you can never to any kind of marketing or branding and really get a full sense of the results.  You need to put together a budget of what you can spend right now and spend a lead generating system from the internet.  realtorexposure.com has been good to me for a fair price.   There are many.   I just don't believe in branding and until you have branding kind of business.   Coca Cola and Coldwell Banker spend money on branding.

No $750 for the 6 months, so it wasn't expensive at all. That's why I did it really. They claimed to have 26,000 cutomers per week.

Kristin, thanks again! I am re-focusing on my website.

Sarah, I bet this realtor has done this for a long time and made it a priority in her ad budget.

Micheal, I don't know what Google PPC is, can you help? I am getting higher in the search due to AR and haven't used Adwords yet, because I am on the 1st page now in searches for my city from AR. Yeah.

Thanks Livia!

There is a team in my office that does the on the cart thing.  I recently asked them how it worked for them.  The person in the know for that team said that back in 2003 2004 when the market was hot they got 4 or 5 deals each year that they could at least partly attribute to the cart thing.

The person went on to say that 2006 2007 2008 they can attribute nothing to the carts.  I asked why they continue to do it, they said it helps a little to re-enforce all the other things they do, such as mailing news letters to over 10,000 homes every month, and god knows what else.

What I do know is that their internet presence is very week and they don't seem to care.

On the bright side you probably have created an impression... so that those who see you a second or third time could be more aware of who you are. So sorry it hasn't brought any customers yet but who knows... one of your future customers may say "yeah... I saw your banner".

It's called 'Interruption' marketing, and it is rarely effective anymore. Today's consumers have tuned out to the incessant advertising noise, much like heading to the kitchen during commercials.

Hi Julie If we all only had the money we spent on a MAYBE IT WILL WORK AND I WON"T KNOW TIL I SPEND THE BIG BUCKS TO FIND OUT.  I am glad the emphasis is on the Internet now.  It is a lot less expensive and seemingly more productive to everything on the outside of the Internet that we have tried.  Some one maybe in the future may call you and say.

"  I remember when...............I need aqn agent.....Hope this happens for you.
