Business news:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose by more than 1 percent on Tuesday, September's first trading day, as oil prices slid sharply, easing concern about future consumer and business spending.
The Dow Jones industrial average (DJI:^DJI - News) was up 182.79 points, or 1.58 percent, at 11,726.34. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^SPX - News) was up 13.98 points, or 1.09 percent, at 1,296.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index (Nasdaq:^IXIC - News) was up 33.76 points, or 1.43 percent, at 2,401.28
U.S. crude fell 6.4 percent to $108.17 a barrel.
