I wanted to share a great experience I had recently at my local Midas Muffler. This is the one in the median strip on Route 3, between the "Crofton" McDonalds and Popeyes. It's technically in Gambrills, but Gambrills connects to Crofton. Anyway, I was coming back one evening from showing houses over in Glen Burnie when my air conditioning stopped working, a couple of my warning lights came on and my car was making more noise than normal. I figured I needed oil really bad (the noise) and thought I had to replace a fuse.
The next morning I went straight to Jiffy Lube which is next to Midas. I like this Jiffy Lube because they don't try to do a lot of add-ons like some places do. I went to another local oil change place and the guy thought he had a sucker - came out with a laundry list of things he "recommended" that I do to my car - $600 worth of miscellaneous things. I haven't gone back there. I was in the waiting room when one of the guys came in holding a heavy metal circular object, about 8" in diameter. He said he found it in the engine compartment. They finished the oil change and all the guys pushed my car over to Midas. The guy at Midas said it was my harmonic balancer. Uh-oh, that doesn't sound good. Sure enough, he called the dealer and the dealer price was over $500 just for this little piece of metal. He actually told me that I could order it from the dealer myself to save money. I called the dealer and I could buy it directly for about $100 less. As I was talking with the dealer, my husband, who came to rescue me, was flipping through the yellow pages and suggested I call Advanced Auto Parts. They ended up having a reproduction part for only $123 and they would have it sent from their Pittsburgh location to arrive the next morning! They also had the two belts that I needed for less than half the price of the dealer.
The guy at Midas said I could leave my car out in the parking lot until the next day. I went to Annapolis to Advanced Auto Parts the next morning to pick up the parts, and Midas installed them for me for a very reasonable labor charge and had the car ready in about two hours. Can't beat service like that. I hear so many horror stories about car repair shops and have always been leary of them because of it so I wanted to share a story about a place that I feel I can trust!
