How Many Grammatical Errors Do You Count in this Description?

By
Industry Observer

While looking through MLS this morning I happened upon these remarks describing a property. I have copied it directly as it appeared in MLS. I'm no English Major but I can spot a few problems. By my count I see at least 5 errors and I'm not counting the fact that every first letter is capitalized. I cannot imagine one of my clients seeing this.

Priceless! When I find descriptions like this I tend to just move on to the next one. People who think that they're being unique with this kind of thing are only hurting themselves and their clients.

I always work hard to be correct, but in the agent comments I often abreviate and use 2 for to and 4 for for @ for at and & for and.  I also sometimes do not have the correct punctuation on the agent comments, there just are not enough characters allowed to get some of the important information accross.

Did the author of those remarks receive a High School Diploma?

This person is supposed to be a marketing professional??  Perhaps the remarks should be sent to the agent's Broker under the subject category of "Have some pride, please fix this!"

If I were the owner of the home and saw marketing remarks like that about my house, my very next action would be to fire the agent.

You do know we have no official language in the US? At least it was in English. Cut em a break, they may not have been schooled here in the good ole USofA. Not especially professional though, I'll grant you. My favorite was a sign by an exit in a Puerto Rican (although it could have been any nationality other than American) Restaurant... Thank you for enjoy us!

I was brought up (raised- not regurgitated) in a house with a grammarly militaristic father. I'm starting a support group... call me. One free tip, never say "Im going to lay down." I can still hear him hollering at me... LIE DOWN!

Funny.

Hey, Steve. Yeah, I would suggest that this agent get a friend to proof read prior to placing this "mess" out there for everyone to read. Take care, Jim

Nice!  The 'powers that be' where I work would string me up and beat me with a wet carrot if I listed one of our Market Homes on our website in a similar fashion!  Great to point out, though!  I see it all the time!

As pathetic as that listing is- I can't help but laugh!

Why are you surprised?  Look at the way agents write posts here at ActiveRain.  Just read some of the  comments that have been left here.  Look how people make up their own rules about capitalization.

Add to the bad spelling and grammar:

  • Pictures of toilets—Please. Every house has a toilet, so unless it's a gold-plated toilet or a Fish 'n' Flush toilet, leave it out.
  • Pictures of the view where the picture is of the front entrance. I guess that's the view when you pull into the driveway.
  • Mislabeled pictures—"Back yard." It is a picture of the back yard. Yes, indeed. Unfortunately, it's a picture of the neighbor's back yard because this one is so small.
  • Lack of any pictures—Huh? There are disposal cameras for as little as $7.95, and digital cameras for as little as $79.95. I do a lot of previewing for my Clients, but I'm not wasting my time visiting a property that can't even provide me a couple of pictures. Gas is too expensive.
  • Wrong address—Unbelievable.

There's probably a couple of others, but those are my pet peeves.

This is definitely one of my pet peeves though I get even more annoyed at bad photos.  Sometimes I count ten grammatial errors in a three line description.

My latest pet peeve is agents failing to leave a card after showing one of my listings (not vacant).  Is it really too much to ask that you leave a sign that you have been in someone's home?  Sellers can all tell that it looks like someone has been there but it is a little creepy if you aren't sure.  Yes I know cards cost .05-,07 cents each so if you don't want to use your good cards have some free ones printed from vistaprint.com to use for showings.  But please be courteous to the seller!

Real estate professionals need to be skilled at many things -- two major ones being written and verbal communication!  I see many realtors blaming others in their office "the woman that inputs the information made these errors".  Double check your work and the work of others if necessary for heavens sake!
