It's the little things that count.

I'm always surprised at how little it takes to lift someone's spirits.  I drive my son to school every morning at about 7:00 a.m.  We take the same route each day not because it's quicker but mainly because I'm half asleep and my car pretty much drives us there on its own. I started to notice a homeless man who sleeps between two buildings.

Each day as I'm driving, bleary-eyed with the sun in my eyes, there he is, rising and shaking off his sleep as we roll by.  Then, my son started it.  He waved at the homeless man.  Tag, you're it.

Next day, same thing.  We drive by, the man is just waking up.  My son waves and we go down the street. The disheveled man gives a blank stare in our direction.

This scenario goes on for a week.  We drive by, the homeless man is just waking up, my son waves and the man barely acknowledges us.

Then one day, we're driving, again the sun is in our eyes, radio blasting and I'm fumbling for my coffee cup.  We round the corner.  The man was standing on the side walk as if he was waiting for us.  He waved.

It takes so little.  Just a nod of the head to acknowledge someone's presence, letting someone in traffic, holding the door open, little stuff.

I think of the people here on Active Rain.  We're from all over the country.  Our daily lives may be different, but so much is the same.  We all have fears, we have successes, we suffer failures, some of us are struggling, but there is kindness and words of encouragement.  So little means so much.

Hello Gary - you know what, I wrote this post and it just up and disappeared!  Glad you found it.  I was just thinking about Paul DeMay and his post and how everyone just showered him with goodness. The kindness of strangers - very powerful- Maybe you're rubbing off on everybody Gary.

Alyce, what a great reminder!  We havde the ability to change someone's life everyday, with just a wave or a smile.  Thanks for a great post.

Hi Laura - thank you!  Your response to my post made my day!  People are starved for positive attention or just an acknowledgement that they exist.  We are all so involved with what we need to get done, or where we need to be.  A small kindness makes all the difference.

Hi Alyce, so true, and the homeless are people too and have come from someplace.  My cousin has since passed away, he became a homeless person in Baltimore, he got involved with hard drugs in the early 70's and one thing led to another.  One day my brother was driving to work and saw him on the corner, stopped and gave him some money.  It was very upsetting, but for whatever reason, he never stayed with his mother, just kept on going back to the streets.

Hi Christine - That's really sad, seeing your cousin on a street corner.  I guess some people just take a different road.  I hope someone showed him a little kindness.  We sure could all use some once in a while.

Hi Alyce... this is a wonderful post and a beautiful reminder that children often do the "right" things because they have not been tainted by cynicism and skeptical behaviors that we, as adults, have learned.  Thank you so much for sharing it.

Morning Steve - I forgot to mention my son is 15 years old, smart, a cross country runner, good looking AND he is the kindest soul I know.  (Oh BTW, did you just start wearing glasses or did I just notice them?)

Hi Alyce... sounds like you did an oustanding job raising your son.  It's clear that you are proud and have every right to be.  I wear glasses sometimes (and should wear them more often than I do).  Someone said that they liked this pic better than my other one, so I switched back to it.  I'm not sure I agree, but I believe in giving the people what they want! :)

Hey Steve - gawd, I hope I didn't brag too much about my son - I'm just astounded that at his age he still has that sensitivity and empathy for other people.  Hope he doesn't lose it.  I thought I was seeing things (no pun intended re: glasses).  Don't you worry, you look great either way:)

Hi Elizabeth - I commented on your post about the gawd awful "collectibles" yesterday.  You are 2 funny and I can really appreciate your sense of humor and take on things.  I made you an associate, hope that's okay (not even sure what that means).  Thanks for reading/commenting here.
