I spent part of the weekend in Idyllwild, an arts town in the Santa Rosa Mountains, about 90 miles inland. The town is also known for offering some of the best hiking around (next time, perhaps).

These photos are of Suicide Rock, as seen from Humber Park, the start of one of the more difficult trails in the area. While we didn't see any, this peak is a popular rock climbing challenge.
I posted an article about Idyllwild on my Fans of Coastal San Diego blog if you are interested in reading more about this cool town.
Idyllwild is less than 3 hours from Carlsbad, so while you could do a day trip, it is worth staying overnight to enjoy all there is to do there.
There is lots to do, with numerous shops, galleries and restaurants, in addition to all the outdoor activities that are available (hiking, boating, horseback riding, camping, biking, hunting).
I have included a visual tour as well. Enjoy!
