Facebook Will Change The World

By
Real Estate Agent with M Realty

Okay - I know that is a big prediction.  Facebook changing the world...but I think we're seeing something that is very intriguing and we may be reaching a tipping point soon with social media.  I don't think it will only be for the teens of the world or the business networking community.  I think this is becoming an important part of our culture.

It may not be Facebook - although they are way ahead of the curve, but I do think that social media is grabbing hold in a way that is much more expansive and mainstream everyday.  Why?  Look at my most recent connections:

  1. Kristin, my cousin - we live 3,000 miles away and I've met her once in my life.  She found me on Facebook.
  2. Gretchen, my Aunt - Over 60 years old.  Impressive and connecting on Facebook.
  3. Margaret, my best friend from high school's mother - Again, an over 60 year old woman.  Not your social media profile type, right?
  4. Lorra - a friend I haven't seen in 12 years found me on Facebook.
  5. Monica - a friend from college I havent seen in 16 years that found my friend on Facebook and in turn found me.

The point - these are people that I might not otherwise have been able to reconnect or stay in touch with.  What does it mean?  Beyond business (though there is the potential for that) it changes things as dramatically as the snail mail once did.  It's an entirely new form of connecting and staying connected that we wouldn't otherwise have had.

Instead of people moving swiftly in and out of your life, what if you could develop, cultivate, and maintain lifetime connections this way?  Think of the possibilities.

Who have you connected with on Facebook (or other social media) that was a suprise?

9/23 Update:  I just got a 'Friend Request' from my MOTHER!!!  Either she is becoming very cutting edge with her tech exposure (not) or Facebook is just becoming more and more mainstream.

Linsey, think you are right! I have been amazed at the connections I have formed and how much easier it is to maintain the connection too.

I liked your post philosopy so much I came back to check on newer comments.

Facebook is now the 3rd largest country in the world as far as population goes. Blows my mind.

I am not one of those who wants to have the most "friends" but I do love getting face to face with people who I can't connect with as often as I like.

It allow me to share joys as well as sadness and the networking is as good as it gets.

Merry Christmas to all.

I'm amazed this post continues to generate comments since I posted it over a year ago.  Facebook changing the world actually no longer seems so far fetched.  Remarkable how much has changed and how significant social media has become!

Linsey, I agree that social media is changing the way the entire world does business, however I thinkn the medium (myspace, facebook, twitter) will constantly change as who is the most widely used resource. Someone will always be coming out with a new and improved latest and greatest platform. That being said Facebook is clearly the one in control at this point

Hi Gerry,

I would have agreed with  you a year ago.  One of the unique things I think we are seeing though is a much broader adoption than we have seen before.  That being said, I want to be where my friends are - and they are on Twitter and Facebook.  It would be kind of lonely to have a small group move to another spot.  It would take a real shift for me to want to begin investing time in a new network.

I wonder if I'm alone in that or not.  Interesting to ponder though for sure...

It's amazing how many people are on facebook. The "typical facebook user" is getting harder and harder to define. The possibilites are endless. Thanks for posting!

The key I found for facebook is to keep business away from the social aspect. Create a fan page for your business, then ask your friends to become a fan of that page. By doing this they have invited you to give them information about your business, and you are not using your social side to push your business, which some may find offensive. Of my close to 400 friends over 100 became fans of my business page. Doing it this way may also bring you fans that are not on your friends list, I was able to pick up random fans, that i would not neccisarily want as a "friend".

I have had many clients contact me on FB and have even been able to call them on their Birthdays, anniversaries etc because FB informed me.  Also my BBerry phone carries all the contacts, updates, and even puts into my calendar all the birthdays....it's an awesome reminder.  I even post open houses, new listings, current home searches (a link that people can click) on my wall.

I love making connections on facebook. I've never sold a house on facebook but all of my friends, family, and past clients are aware that I'm doing business. Great way to show how active you are in the business!

Very nice post, Linsey! I think the recession and the facebook phenomenon, occurring as they did, almost simultaneously, created the "prefect storm" for real estate marketing and staying in touch with our SOI ... economically.

Linsey, you are so right.  I graduated from high school in '67.  I am now connected with nearly half of my class of over 400.  One is living in Europe anther in Alaska and everyplace in between.  Simply amazing!

I came back to revisit and find it intriguing that the activity on this post appears minimal to me.

I definitely think it's more true to do than when you first wrote it.

That is amazing! I am friend with some people on the Facebook (we haven't even met), and we share some thoughts with each other, commenting on events, etc. It is a lot of fun.

Have a great day,Lindsey

I think FaceBook is essential for anyone in our industry. It reminds me of way back when people were all first getting email ~ some people just didn't see the value and/or think that it would stick. This is where we are with FaceBook I think.

Great post!

Seven years later and your prediction was very true! My latest re-connection was a friend from high school in Wisconsin who's now out on the west coast.
