There really are Scorpions in Arizona

The other day my wife and I were getting ready to go to bed and I said "hon, you're not gonna belive this, but there is a scorpion in our living room." She said "right... I'm going to bed." Again, I retirated, "hon, seriously, bring me a big shoe... I am not taking my eyes off of this thing."  Now, some of you might realize why practical joking can backfire... I am known to be a joker.. .but not this night.  She came out and screamed when she saw I was not kidding.

She got me a shoe and I took care of it, but it had me thinking. "Were there others?" "How did it climb to the second story to our condo?"

For the next few days, I would walk looking at the floor, but I guess I will get over it. My wife grew up here and had never seen a live scorpion, and never expected to see one in Mesa.

So Arizonans... check your shoes, hats, and gloves before putting them on!

I have a client who keep a glass in every room of her home.  She just places the glass over the scorpion capturing the scorpion.  Then (I think this takes a little practice) she gets something to lure the scorpion into the glass, and covers the glass to prevent the scorpion from escaping.  Don't ask me what she does with it later because I don't want to know.  Good luck with spraying and making sure that you don't step on one.

Leolinda, that's a bit alarming. Sounds like there are more scorpions in Sun City than in Mesa.

The ones you really should worry about are the small, light colored ones. The larger ones with dark stripes down the back aren't very poisonous (not too much comfort, I know. Our cats bring the big, darker ones in).

April - Thank you for stopping by as well.

Leslie - I have heard this. This one was almost camoflouged with our carpet (so it was light colored) and if I recall it was total of about 2-2/12 inches in length.

Scorpions are nocturnal...They come out at night.  In the cold weather, they go dormant so if you see one that you think is dead, it might be just hibernating.. ...be careful..don't touch!   In many Arizona areas if there are crickets, there are scorpions. Their sting is very painful.  One stung my pinky toe and I ended up in the hospital actually hallucinating!  The poison can really effect you. They do like hiding in shoes, under rocks, things on the floor....also they like garages...so be careful!  The emergency room Dr. said if you ever get stung, try to capture the scorpion and bring it to the hospital so they know what kind of sting they are dealing with.

Thanks Janis. That is good information... although I have to say, I saw a cricket in the living room last night, so now you've got me thinking again :-)
