I remember 7 years ago today. Remembering 9/11-I will never forget. Today lower Manhattan is thriving with new residential buildings, restaurants, stores, families and strollers. The trend of people fleeing lower Manhattan after 9/11/01 has reversed. Battery Park City, Tribecca and the financial district have become very desirable popular neighborhoods. In fact the population below Chamber street has doubled since 9//11/01.
Most of the new buildings and all the new buildings in Battery Park are "green". In fact a new "green" concrete icrete designed for the Freedom Tower at ground zero is the highest strength concrete ever poured in the history of New York. Since its introduction at the Freedom Tower less than a year ago the new concrete has been poured in over 30 construction sites from lower Manhattan to the Upper West Side including Frank Gehry's Beekman Tower and 11 Times Square.
New Yorkers and particularly lower Manhattan residents are reminded of 9/11 every day because we see the site. Yesterday Mayor Bloomberg urged the Port Authority to ensure that the memorial is completed by the 10th anniversary of the attacks. There have been too many delays because of all the layers of city, state, federal and private sector involved. The Mayor wants the city to take over the project.
New Yorkers and visitors had the chance yesterday to leave a message in memory of the victims of the attacks. The beams that will make up the memorial are on display on the north side of Battery Park at Battery Place between Greenwich and Washington streets for the public to sign.
A report released this week by the New York City Health Department show that more than 400,000 people have been exposed to physical and mental health problems as a result of the attacks. Of those, between 35,000 and 70,000 people developed post-traumatic stress disorder. As many as 12,600 people may have developed asthma as a result of the dust from the collapse. Asthma was more prevalent among residents who did not evacuate on 9/11 or who returned within a day or two of the attacks.

I will always remember those innocent lives lost and all the heroes who sacrificed their lives to save others and our brave men and woman in the military. God Bless America! God Bless New York!
