Time to Get Back to Basics

I think it's time that I give up on buying produce from the grocery store.  My husband and I were both poisoned by our produce this week.  Don't know if was the lettuce, or the tomatoes, but either way, we both ended up sick.

Luckily, my husband's illness was less severe than mine.  I ended up in the doctor's office yesterday.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not a wimp.  I'm happy to let nature take it's course.  But I refuse to suffer into severe dehydration when I can't even take a sip of water without getting icepick-like pains in my abdomen and minutes later dry heaving until the small amount of liquid I've ingested comes back.

So I lost an entire day of work to a bad head of lettuce, or bad tomato.  Really makes you scared to think of the many, many things we buy that we have absolutely no idea who is touching them, their cleanliness, or where they are coming from.

Yes, it's time to start my own garden, and buy from local growers until then.  Farmers Market, here I come!  My health, and my husband's health, are too precious to leave to the sub-standard conditions that are producing food poisoning outbreaks at a record pace.

Chris Ann, I am sorry to hear you both had such a bad experience.  I can't remember that last time I got into something that made me sick like that, but it is miserable!  I like the picture of the little gardener!

Chris Ann...

I used to have a HUGE vegetable garden and I miss it. Now I just do tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. I love the taste of fresh produce. When we moved to out home 6 years ago, the deer ate my entire garden so I have not taken the big plunge again but the high cost of food and the saftey of the supply makes me think that next year I'll be back into it!

Ann:  I wish that had been our first bout with food poisoning too, but it happened to me three times now since the beginning of the year.

Richard:  Our food supply definitely seems compromised.  Besides, there is nothing like a home grown tomato.

Thank youHello! I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for visiting and leaving me a comment! I am sorry to hear you were sick... I think more people are going to start growing their own or shop at the farmers markets. It looks like you have a great little helper! I hope you are feeling better! Brenda :)

Brenda:  I wish she were my helper.  She's the daughter of a friend of mine.  But she takes the cutest pictures.

Chris Ann,

So sorry to hear you were sick! We are also at the point where we try to buy as much produce as possible at the local farmer's market. I've already spoken to one of my neighbors, who has a beautiful garden, about starting my own next spring. You have a great piece of property and a garden would do wonderfully in that location. Hope you and James are feeling better. Feel free to call if you ever need a ride to the doctor!

By the way, that is truly the cutest gardener in the WORLD!! She should be a model! She must have a pretty substantial green thumb, just look at the size of the sunflowers she has grown!

Take care!

I agree what a lovely model/gardener. I have boys - looking forward to the (hopefully) granddaughters. My reaction is to quit eating vegetables - oh that's probably not any better.

Chris Ann,

We love gardening...flowers, vegetables the works.  Also we have started using a fruit and veggie soap for cleaning before preparing...you might try it.

Rick:  I'm likely to fall the other way and just eat veggies.  You hear a lot of reports about tainted meat too.

Trey:  Good idea.  I will have to do something.  Plain old water isn't cutting it.
