Switching Teams

By
Real Estate Agent with REMAX Crosstown Kempenfelt Group

For a number of Realtors, there comes a time when leaving a current Brokerage to move to another becomes not just a passing whim, but a necessity in order to move comfortably into another level of success in our chosen career.  Whatever the reason for the move, be it economic, brand exposure, clashings of personalities, or bad management, a move in this industry is not nessessarily an easy thing.  Our profession is not one where a sales person hands in their resignation to the Broker of Record and gives two weeks notice....so what is the alternative....and...how does one create an exit with a modicum of grace, without burning any bridges as they are heading for the door?

The GRANT'S (Gary & Candi), have just walked through these murky waters, and to be very blunt...it was an uncomfortable experience for both of us! After a very long tenure of 17 years with one Brokerage, one would have to reason that the person who is leaving is just not happy with his situation, and in spite of talking retirement in a couple of years, decides not to roll over and remain unhappy.  So away we go to plan where, when, etc....all in the quiet of confidentiality so as not to cause any undue upset with the current Brokerage, clients or colleques.  It does take a plan though!  Suffice it to say, when we were ready to leave, the intent was to leave quickly with little disruption to our large Brokerage, and without the barage of normal questioning that would accompany a top producing agents exit. "Harmony"....that was one of the items on our list of settling matters with management .  We were never given the opportunity (which we requested) of a face to face meeting with anyone from management, all was said over the phone and left both of us feeling very let down and somewhat angry.

I would be very interested in hearing others experience in moving from one Brokerage to another.  Positive? Negative?...please share!

As a side note...Gary and I have been with our new Brokerage for 3 weeks now, and we have been given a very warm welcome from everyone we meet here....good people! Business has been brisk in spite of learning new systems and getting ourselves into an organized state.  It remains of course that in spite of the 'busyness"....we are NEVER too busy for any of your referrals!

100% representation means NEVER DUAL AGENCY !

Gary, in my sometimes not so humble opinion, the best switch you will ever make is the switch from  salesperson licensing to brokerage /agencylicensing, whether as a corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship.

Take the course, take the test, and become an independent. There is a another benefit of being an independent brokerage /agency. The only time you will be faced with the perils of dual agency is on your own listings.

Larry: Thanks for your input. The entreprenurial spirit in me agrees with you, but the benefits of an established organization and brand also has some very significant advantages for us at this stage of our business life. If I were 25 years younger, I would probably give serious consideration to your suggestion. Thank you once again. Gary
