Silver Spring Md The Oldest House in Silver Spring?

Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc MD 82788 DC SP97220

Front from Harvey Road

This old farmhouse sits at the highest point on a hill overlooking Colesville Road from the top of Greyrock Road and Harvey Roads in The Woodside Park Neighborhood of Silver Spring.  Built in 1833, it is by far the oldest house I have ever encountered in Silver Spring.

Surrounded now by homes built in the 1940's on Harvey Road and Greyrock Road, it looks to me like before  these homes were built around it, it must have looked out on Colesville Road and down at Mrs K'sTollhouse with lots of acreage around and probably had a Colesville Road address. The address now is Greyrock Road, Silver Spring, the street address is at the back of the 3/4 acre property.  The front of the property (front of the house with the porch) Back of house on Greyrockis at the end of Harvey Road facing Colesville

I was surprised to find out that this was the home of David and Elizabeth Scull.  They purchased it from the Watson family in 1949 and Elizabeth Scull lived in the house until her death in 1981. Elisabeth L. Scull was a descendant of the Blair and Lee Families of Silver Spring and had a tremendous career on the Montgomery County Council.  I found it cool that she was a Champion of Affordable Housing and Housing for the poor in Montgomery County.

That's cool!  Makes me want to see if I can find the oldest home here in the St. Louis area!

I had no idea there were houses that old in that neighborhood.

Actually the house in in the Woodside Forest neighborhood, not Woodside Park.  Generally speaking, Woodside Forest is surrounded by Dale Drive, Georgia Avenue, the Beltway, Sligo Creek, and Colesville Road.  Woodside Park is generally south of Dale Drive between Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road, north of the downtown Silver Spring.  The deeds for the lots in the subdivision around the old house may say Woodside Park, Section 7, but this was just a real estate developer trying to capitalize on the name of the existing Woodside Park neighborhood, which was platted by its developer with six sections.

Does anyone live in the house? Is it still standing?

Yes the house is lived in by the owners and is still standing.  It appears to be in need of a lot of deferred maintainance on the exterior.

The oldest House in Silver Spring is the Kinsman Farm house built in 1766.

Thanks Bob Oshel ....I lived on Woodside Pkwy in the sixties and seventies and couldn't place that house for the life of me. As a kid I was all over Woodside Park.
