CASTROVILLE HISTORIC HOMES

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Eichler Properties DRE # 183868

There is so much history and so many historic homes in Castroville it is hard to choose your favorite one.  These  pictures  are of The Tarde Hotel built in 1852 by Victor and Clarissa Tarde, natives of Calais, France.  In his book, "A Journey Through Texas" Fredick Law Olmstead wrote of his arrival at Castroville in 1853: Upon the banks of the Medina River stands Castroville, a village containing a colony of Alsatians, who proudly call themselves Germans, but who speak French or a mixture of French and German.

There were many famous clients that stayed at this hotel, Robert E. Lee, Ronald S. MacKenzie, John Bell Hood, Edward Ord and Abner Doubleday were just a few.  The currant owner is Jessie Caseres.

Don, it is great that this historic hotel has been so well preserved!  It is beautiful.  We need to hold on to at least some of our history.

Sorry for getting by your post so late, my friend.

Got to tell ya, the Tarde Hotel sure would be my kind of place to call home. You sure did do a fine job taken the photos.

Is it still used as a Hotel or a home for the owner ?

Hi! Dale,  Thanks for stopping by, the property is now used only for a private residence.  This little town has more than fifty houses that were built in the same time frame and all are kept in very good condition.  They have a great historical trail because most homes are within a few blocks of each other.

Don: I saw the house on 1500 San Jacinto  I know that it is in bad repair, but I would love to restore at least most of it.  Do you know any of the history regarding this home?  It was built in 1857 so it was a hundred years old the year I was born.  I am not sure why I love it so much but I do.  Thanks for any information you can give me.

Donna,  The person that I loaned my Castorville book too is on vacation, just left today for two weeks.. It never fails:):) Do you live in the area?  I would recomend that you go to the Castorville website www.castorville.com This is the chamber site and they do have a lot of information and a contact number that might answer the question on 1500 San Jacinto for you.

My parents bought this house in 89 and did the renovation work to it. Proud to say I planted those oaks in the front drive, put in the circle drive and built and painted that picket fence. When we moved in, the space between the house and the small two story quarters had been turned into a garage. My mother turned it into a awesome kitchen. The small two story structure was vacant. It was rumoured there was a basement in the room at one time. When we refinished the floor we dug and sifted dirt hoping to find something but never did. We did remove the plaster that had been put over the old fire place and discovered the old bee hive style oven. Many great memories. And my room was in the attic. My mother researched archives and discovered most of what you see written about this hotel.

My great grandmother was from Castroville. Her name was Elizabeth Gibbons. Her parents at one time had owned a hotel there in Castroville. She later married George Alexandre Hay and moved to Bandera, where my great grandfather was quiet well known as a rancher and local Judge. I am trying to find information on which hotel Elizabeth Gibbons family owned. I wondered could the Tarde Hotel have been that hotel? This would have been in the 1800's. If anyone has any information on the Gibbons family in Castroville, or the Hay or Minear family please contact me, thankyou for any info you may have!
