This was my beach house in Crystal Beach, Texas before Hurricane Ike. My younger sister, Renee,  and her husband live there presently. My dad lives next door.

This is what it looks like now:

I had to get these images off of satellite today.

It will be weeks and weeks, if not months, before we will be allowed to step foot on Crystal Beach. It is fixing to have martial law declared, and the air space is currently a no-fly zone. The estimate is that 90% of the structures are completely destroyed. The death toll has yet to be announced, but it must be bad if they are restricting access entirely.

Many, many, many of my friends are missing. Thank God my own family evacuated in time. Crystal Beach (also known as the Bolivar Peninsula) is essentially an island, with a man-made cut in one end with a bridge, and a ferry service on the other end. It was that skinny sliver of land directly to the right of Galveston, and it took a direct hit by the eye of Hurricane Ike. Many people got trapped by the water that was rising two days before Ike even made landfall. There was little time to escape for many people.

Please take a moment to hug your family members and make that call to someone you have been meaning to ring up, but have been putting it off for a more convenient time.

You just never know when life is going to throw you a curve.

Thanks Donna and Wendy.

We found out this morning my grandmother's house in Bridge City is total loss, also. Water to the roofline.

It is taking so long after the hurricane to find out any information due to the restrictions on returning. My grandmother has been sitting on the back porch crying for four days. It's hard to console someone when you have no clue what is going on. Now we know.

That's 4 people in my immediate family that have lost everything they own that wouldn't fit in their cars. But at least every one of them is safe and sound!

It is hard to imagine your devastation, Michelle.  I have never had to face starting over in this sense.  Your personal loss is great, and I feel for you.  Continue to hold your loved ones near, and remember it is they that are irreplaceable.  This brings wishes of every good kind to you and yours.

I am just so grateful I didn't actually live there anymore.

After Hurricane Rita, we were displaced long enough  (one month, with no FEMA money) for me to make a life elsewhere, get a job, and I couldn't go back, financially.

Without Rita, I wouldn't have relocated to Abbeville, LA, and I wouldn't have an extra house for my grandmother to live in right now.

My sister and dad are talking about a new life in Austin.

They say the only constant we can trult rely on is change. I just wish my 84 year old dad and my 90-something year old grandmother didn't have to start over. It's hardest on the elderly, I beleive,

Such is life. So many more have much more to deal with than we do.

Sometimes Mother Nature stages with wild flowers and at other times she stages with wild winds. I simply cannot imagine what you are going through. You were very smart to leave and I am so glad you are safe.

I'm shocked! So comforting to know your family is ok. I can imagine the heartbreak and shock your parents must feel.

Let us know how your friends are as you find them.

Best wishes to all.

Oh Michelle, so sorry about this awful news but thank goodness everyone is safe.  I just can't imagine how you and your family must be feeling with this level of devastation.  God speed.  Everyone is thinking about you.
