When is a front door more than a door?

When you're trying to sell the house it's attached to. A front door and entry area can actually say a lot about the house you are about to enter.  When selling a home it can tell a potential buyer how well the house is maintained and cared for.  Today many of us seldom enter our homes through the front door, we usually come in through the garage, leaving the entry forgotten and neglected. Big mistake.

When selling a house a front door needs to shine. It should be clean, clutter free, bright and inviting. As a buyer approaches the house they're already evaluating it, even before they've seen the inside.  If the entry is dirty or in need of paint or repair, has a ratty old doormat, my pet-peeve, and generally looks unkempt, than buyers are getting the message that the house may not be well maintained or cared for.  This is very uninviting and sets a negative tone.

The door is the point where the sale begins. As a home stager it is one of my focal points.  That's what staging a home does, creates a positive emotional appeal. After all isn't that what we're looking for to sell a house is for a buyer to have an positive connection to what they see? If the buyer is turned off, even a little, before they've even seen the inside, than that is a lost opportunity. The opportunity of a positive first impression has been lost.  Please, if nothing else is done to prepare the outside of a home, make sure the front door and entry area look great, is clean and inviting and says, "welcome" to this home.
