Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo

I recently commented on a Localism blog about my visit to Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, and could not help myself to write more.

My 4 year old grandson, Gary, along with his mom and my wife visited Lowry Park Zoo this past Saturday. We not only got to enjoy the Zoo and the more than 2000 animals, from Florida and similiar type habitants, Gary got to play with many of Fisher-Price's new toys that will be in stores this Holiday season.

Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa has been voted the #1 Family Friendly Zoo in the US .It's currently celebrating it's 20th year. The Zoo which is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas has many to see, from a Florida panther to Africian Penguins. A manatee exhibit includes a hospital for their care. Primate climb free, and you should see the week old Mandrill Monkeys and the recently born Orangutan. there is a children's zoo within the Zoo, called Wallaroo Station. Here children can pet animals. There is also a Stingray tank which allow interaction by all. There are rides, including the new Gator Falls, a Treetop Skyride, a Merry-go-round and more. Food can be purchased at an in the  restaurant or one of the many snack area where you can cool off with a drink.

I was amazed at how well laid out Lowry Park Zoo was. Visiting with a 4 year old, and having to answer his endless questions allowed me to have a new perspective on wildlife preservation in general, and allowed me to appreciate the things around us so much more.

You owe it to yourself to visit Lowry Park Zoo.

Tony - I can't procrastinate any longer. As much as Ienjoy visiting zoos around the country, I can't believe I haven't taken the time to visit Lowry yet. I know it's a special zoo, and I will make it a point to visit soon with camera in hand and share the sights with everyone here.

Thanks for reminding me!

Great post Tony!  I, like Donald, have not been to the zoo in many years.  More years than I care to remember.

I believe my last trip was when I was a child.  I grew up in Tampa and that goes back many years.  As a matter of fact, my memory is of the concrete "rainbow" that passed over a wishing well that we would toss pennies down.

I never took my sons and unless my wife took them, they will not have memories as I do.  But, my three granddaughters would love to go.

Thanks for the post.

Rick, thank you for the comments. Lowry Park Zoo is not the Zoo it was 10 years ago, it's come a long way, and your grandkids will enjoy it, especially playing in the fountains; my grandson did.
