Smoke Alarms

We all have them (hopefully!), but did you know that smoke alarms require more maintenance than just replacing the batteries when you hear them chirping?  According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms should be tested on monthly basis following the manufacturer's instructions.  Batteries should be changed annually whether they are chirping or not.  By their statistics, almost all U.S. Homes have at least one smoke alarm installed, but 65% of home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms do not last forever.  Replace yours every 10 years & if you can't remember how old yours are it is probably a good idea to change them.  If you or someone you know is unsure of the fire safety in their home you can contact your local fire department for more information on improving your home.
