Showing Homes in the Cold & Snow? Not in Texas!

Austin had our first cold-front come through yesterday - we call them 'northers' because they come from the north.  It got down to 67 degrees and it's only mid September! Don't laugh - this is Texas remember. Given the 30 something consecutive days of over 100 degree highs the past couple months, this is a cold front for us. I've lived in Texas now for 26 years but was raised in Erie, Pa. so I know what a cold winter season is like.

I wasn't selling real estate back then when I lived in Erie, but I got to thinking today about Realtors who do sell homes during the winter time - in blizzards and 4 feet of snow. Packing on 3 layers of clothes and shoveling your way out the door to show homes with temperatures in the low teens.

In Austin, everything comes to a screeching halt on a cold, icy, blizzard day. To us that means a 1" blanket of snow and 10 degree chill factor.  Businesses and schools close, roads close down, people stay home and that includes most Realtors. We don't get day in and day out of inclement weather so it's easy for us to put the ‘Closed for the Day' sign out. But Realtors in long winter climates don't have that luxury, I'm sure

Thinking about all this, is just another reason why I love Texas. Yea, I miss the first snow fall of the season and all that but I'm still a bit spoiled by our mild winters which, for me in some past years, has been my best selling season.

So for those of you who do sell in the snow country areas, my hats off to you for your dedication to the clients you serve on a cold winter day.

Karen,

When Erie gets more than 6 inches of snow, I bring my gloves with me.

I remember the brief snow we recently had in central Texas. I am ready for more!

Cynthia:  I do love our warm winter climate.  New Mexico ski spoles are only 10 or so hours away if I get homesick for snow.

Dennis:  Nice to meet a fellow Erieite!  You are a die-hard -- gloves!

Trey:  That's an awesome picture!  Yes, I would love to see day or so of it!

Funny part is we head for the hills and don't show homes if it hits 100 degrees. I can't do that and we headed to the beach when it hit 100, it was a nice 67 degrees there. (LOL)

Wow, I just never even thought of that!  I am so spoiled here in so cal and when it rains I sometimes want to put that "closed" sign up.  I am such a baby compared to what so many other agents have to endure!

We may definitely have it easy in the winter, but showing houses in the 100+ degree summer heat here is not easy either.  The heat can just exhaust you after showing several houses... especially if they are vacant homes with the electricty (and A/C) turned off.  It all evens out, I guess. :)

Todd:  The beach is my escape from the heat too!

Cristal: California weather is awesome!  You're right, you are spoiled! :)

Steve:  Those 100  degree days can be quite draining -- you're right.  Thank goodness it does away after a couple or so months.

Ray:  LOL -- You are one prepared Realtor!
