Wal-Mart Heading For The Hills - Sad But True!

No, it's not what you think!  Wal-Mart has not decided to move it's headquarters to New Mexico or Chile.  Something much, much worse has happened and, unfortunately, it has happened in my little suburb of Garfield Heights, Ohio.

Wal-Mart in the new shopping plaza on Transportation Boulevard shut its doors on Monday morning.  The unthinkable happened.  Without any warning to employees, who showed up to work yesterday as they did for every Monday morning for the past year since the plaza has been operational, only to be told that the store was closing.  Just like that, all of those employees were now out of work with no opportunity to search for another place of employment.

I've often wondered why companies chose to close that way.  I mean, if you're in a techy job, I'm sure they wouldn't want you sabotaging the computers by having ample time to plant a virus in the system.  But at Wal-Mart??  What are you going to do, sabotage the check-out scanners?  What could have caused them to not care one lick about their employees to the point of not caring enough to give them any notice whatsoever?  I don't get it.

Now, I've been told that there are problems with the sewer issues over there, run-off problems from the other building happening in the area, etc.  Still, is that really enough reason to give out hundreds of pink slips with no notice?

I don't think so.  To all those who have been shut out at Wal-Mart this week - my heart goes out to each and every one of you.

Add that to the list of reasons why I won't shop at Wal Mart.  How very sad for those people who will now all be competing with each other for new, similar jobs.  Shame on Wal Mart.

You're right, Kathy.  Unfortunately, they are such a big business here in Ohio that the stores are everywhere (almost literally).  It is sad how their commercials express that they are so concerned with making us have better lives and yet can turn around and close an entire store without a word, putting so many people out of a job without batting an eye.

Bringing you home...

That's really too bad. My brother works for Walmart corp. I think that as a whold they aren't a bad company. He's been there for years and never complained about how they take care of him... I have another relie that works at Target. Truthfully, any company has the ability to pull this on their employees... and many have. It's just tough. Sorry for those who will struggle financially due to this.

I am sorry it happened. The Walmart near our house closed because they are going to build a bigger store and I miss it . They have opened a Super Walmart but it is further away.

Is this the one built on a landfill?

If so there is methane under the building.

Yeah, Lindsey, it really could happen with any company.  The sad thing is that this store really hasn't been there that long.

There is a Super Walmart near here too, Gita, not really too far.  Unfortunately, that store has been open and operational for a few months now so I doubt these people will be able to get jobs there.

I'm not sure if it is built on a landfill, Mike.  If that's the case, is the entire shopping plaza on a landfill then?  Even so, is that reason to close the store with no warning to the employees?  That just doesn't seem right to me.

Walmart has the resources to do right by their employees... this doesn't need to happen the way you've discribed.

From a GOOD source 85 of the 147 employees have been relocated to other stores and the remainder will have the option move to other stores.

Thanks for posting that link, Mike.  It was interesting reading, to say the least.  Do you know if there really IS a methane problem there or is it really because of money that they moved out.  I'd think if there was a real methane issue, the other stores in the shopping plaza would be chomping at the bit to get out of there, too!  It would make sense.  But just one store is affected?

You have it from a good source that half of the employees were relocated to another store but I was told by an employee leaving the store that they were told that morning that the store was closing.  (I didn't realize they were closed and needed tome diapes and vitamins so I ran over to Wal-Mart, which is 5 minutes from my house.)  And what happene tothe other 62 employees?  Are they just out of luck?

You're right, Chuck, it shouldn't happen that way.  Sad to say that it does in too many cases.

You know, Sheila, unfortunately it probably happens a lot more than ANY of us realize.

To my unnamed commentor, I'm not spreading rumors like a high school kid. Wal-Mart did NOT relocate every employee in the store.  I stopped at Wal-Mart on a quick run and saw that the store was closed in the middle of the day. An employee leaving the store told me that they were told that morning that the store was closing.  Another commentor above said that 85 out of 147 employees were relocated. What about the rest? And just because they were relocated doesn't mean that everything is a-ok. What if they were relocated to a store that is much further away from where they live or more difficult to get to on public transportation? I know many people who would take a job anywhere if they were just told that their current job is gone. You need something so you'll take just about anything.  That doesn't make it right though.  If you know so much about the situation, why not identify yourself?
