Home Staging Tips

Staging doesn't have to be expensive.  Sometimes simple things make the biggest difference.  Here are some tips to get you started...

  • Look at your house as though you are a potential buyer. What stands out?
  • Assess your curb appeal. Remove dead plants & weeds, add flowers in summer, hardy greenery in winter.
  • Limit decorative items near the entryway as these are too personal.
  • Kitchens and Baths sell houses. You've heard it a thousand times. How do yours stack up against the competition?     Sometimes simply de-cluttering, painting and updating hardware and fixtures can make your old kitchen or bath look brand new!
  • Pare down your furnishings and accessories. Only leave items that are in good condition and those that really compliment your décor.
  • Start Packing! You are going to have to do it later anyway so why not clear all un-necessary items away.
  • Don't forget the Garage! Too much stuff in there says "This house doesn't have enough storage!"

These are the tips I tell every homeowner.  Even if your house has been professionally decorated, it may not be ready to sell.  Staging is about appealing to the masses and designing to sell---not to live.  So even the most beautifully decorated houses probably have too much stuff and are way to personal.

It can be hard to say what needs to be said to your homeowners, especially when you know they think their house is the best of the bunch!  That is where hiring a professional stager to do a basic consultation comes in handy.  You get to play good cop to our bad cop.  We are trained to tactfully (sorry Donna Freeman) handle every situation and, as an unbiased 3rd party, we can usually get even the most resistant sellers on board.
