Shell Knob Acreage In times past, persons wanting to build a summer cottage on
Table Rock Lake, would sink a 50 gallon oil drum in a hole in the ground, and call that their septic system.  This obviously turned into a problem as leaching from the barrel could contaminate their well water, or drain into the lake.  That has all changed.  As a Shell Knob Realtor, I'm happy to report that the Stone County Health Department requires more now.

A site evaluation is required in Stone County for every septic system needed,  This evaluation must be done by a registered soil scientist.  A percolation test by itself is not acceptable.  The site evaluation is used in determining the suitability of the soil for a conventional system and the amount of lateral field needed for the proposed system.

  • 1. If the site evaluation deems the property unsuitable for a conventional system, a registered engineer will need to design the system or a variance may be requested for an experimental subsurface sewage disposal system from the Stone County Environmental Health Services Office.
  • 2. The installer will then locate the septic system on the lot (after fill is brought in, if filled) - stake out location of tank, lateral lines, curtain drains, well and water lines on the property.
  • 3. The installer or engineer will complete the detailed drawing on the permit application form supplied by the county, including all distances as staked out and completing the trench details.  Either the installer or the owner may submit to the Health Dept. a completed application along with a copy of the site evaluation and appropriate fee of $75 for single family dwelling to obtain the permit.
  • 4. Plans are then reviewed by the Health Department and a visit is made to the site.  This process may take up to 5 days and approval or denial is made at this time.
  • 5. The Health Department cannot approve a system before plans are submitted.
  • 6. Once approval is given, a construction permit to post on the site is issued and construction of the system can begin.  The person operating the backhoe must have copy of plans.
  • 7. Final inspection is made before backfilling the trenches.  This requires a 24 hour advance notice to the Health Department.

Costs will run between $4,000 - $8,000 depending upon the terrain and installers time involved in installation.

This information is for stone county our 3.6 acres is in Barry county do you have any info on their requirements I have been trying to get infor on septic, building permits, well pemits and required inspections but it appears that barry county does not have a website that addresses this or it is not required. We were planning to go to cassville to explore these issues before start improving the lot.
