How is the Political Situation in the Philippines? Is it Safe to Outsource Projects to Philippines?

Over the past five years, the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has seen its fair share of instability and unrest. The Oakwood Mutiny of July 2003 was by far the most significant. It was originally felt that the economic impact would be negative and quite long-range in effect, but this was soon proven as not being true, especially where the local and offshore IT industry was concerned. The Philippine society did show signs of resiliency in the ensuing years.

For the remainder of that year, the experts found a renewed upswing in economic growth. The situation was relegated to being nothing more significant than a mere nuisance. XMG Inc., a research firm, stated three years later (2006) that contract cancellations and/or suspensions should be expected. Insufficient understanding of the social unrest in the Philippines was at the core of this misunderstanding. However, the situation began improving within a year to 18 months of the incident. Furthermore, barring any more political unrest, it is felt that the situation will continue to improve.

Interestingly enough, most of the quoted experts claimed that the scenario had little or no impact on the Philippines’ outsourcing industry. Outsourcing service providers have supposedly maintained a “business as usual” attitude, but the question still remains --- does the political situation in the Philippines equate to safe business where the outsourcing of projects to that country is concerned?

Typically, one of the biggest influences on the economic state of a country is the stability or instability of the political climate. Because of the fact that the Philippine political scenario is still unpredictable at best, it’s very speculative as to how safe it really is to conduct outsourcing business with that country. Conversely, when you consider the fact that the number one outsourcing country is India, it should come as no surprise that they are still a better choice for outsourcing than the Philippines.

India is well established in the BPO industry, whereas the Philippines are relative newcomers to the arena. India’s government continues to be stable and the country’s economy has been in a continued upswing for the last three or four years now. When InSO entered the BPO industry over 6 years ago, they brought the best of all possible worlds with them. First and foremost, InSO has a local presence with headquarter in Los Angeles, California and outsourcing facility in India.

Additionally, when you take the above economic and political climates into consideration, it just makes good sense to do business with a BPO entity that has both an on-shore and an offshore presence. What is the benefit to the client that contracts to InSO? Most importantly, the critical benefit is that you are afforded on-shore outsourcing quality at offshore pricing. It is truly, the best of both worlds when you think about it.

When the political climate is unstable, there is too much uncertainty in the air as to the safety of your offshore investments. This is never an issue when you contract to InSO. The government in India is very stable and the economy is continually improving. Also, consider the fact that when you compare the two countries, Philippines are a “new kid on the block”.

For over six years now, InSO has become the industry expert at call-center and IT outsourcing having conducted over 200 campaigns in the BPO industry in that period or time. It is doubtful that any company in the Philippines can boast such expertise.
