On our first day in Mooresville, my husband and I decided to visit Historic Downtown Mooresville. As we strolled along we happened upon Cool Breeze Cyclery (in it's former location before expanding to their new Exit 33 location) and ventured in to see if we could learn about the area cycling since my husband has raced road bikes for over 15 years.
Relocating from Southern California to Lake Norman, we had no idea what kind of cycling and cyclists existed. When we saw such brands as Serotta, Cervelo and Trek, we knew that Cool Breeze Cyclery was for serious cyclists.
It turns out that Cool Breeze Cyclery is much more than just a bike shop! Yes, they have "the broadest in-stock selection of bikes in the region", they offer Expert Bio-Mechanical Fitting, they have an excellent service department and sell all of the cycling clothing, accessories and safety gear for both men and women.
But, they also cater to Triathletes...providing all of the multi-sports gear needed and with a full-time multi-sports coach on staff the expertise as well. Their new location in the Gateway Plaza at Exit 33, has a fitness/personal training studio where they offer personal training and small group training sessions as well.
If you are serious about your fitness, Cool Breeze also has the science and technology to maximize your efforts:
- Resting Metabolic Rate Test
- Exercise Metabolic Assessment
- Peak Oxygen Uptake (VO2 max)
- Body Fat Analysis
- Computrainer
- Exercise Metabolic Specific Zone Classes
- Nutrition
- Weight Management
- The New Leaf Metabolic Assessment Profile
I know when I was more hardcore about my fitness, I would have loved to find such testing and an expert evaluation of my truer fitness. They also provide you with valuable feedback and give you "the tools to help you achieve your goals, from workouts to meal plans."
In the interest of full disclosure to those of you who are considering moving to Lake Norman, this is NOT currently a road bike-friendly area. The lack of shoulders and narrow roads provide minimal, safe cycling for even the best. My husband has figured out his daily 30-mile ride along the lake avoiding the main roads entirely but commuting by bike would be pretty risky.
Cool Breeze does have weekly group rides, organized by ability levels. Most of these rides are at the Lake Norman State Park or in the bicycle-friendly roads of Davidson and around the business park in Huntersville. (They have a full calendar on their website.)
The good news is that thanks to the efforts of local cyclists, Cool Breeze Cyclery and First Flight Bicycles up in Statesville, The town of Mooresville now has a Comprehensive Bicycle Plan and there is a long-term plan for a proposed bike path that would circle Lake Norman. These dedicated cyclists also maintain the mountain biking trails at the Lake Norman State Park.
There are also several fundraising events each year, the most notable being "Ride the lake: a 12 to 100 mile ride to raise funds for the Lake Norman Red Cross.
You will find all of this information at Cool Breeze and more as almost all of the staff are actively involved in our cycling community.
Oh, and by the way...when you go, say hi to my son Michael...he is an awesome bike mechanic and will take good care of you.
