Have you ever walked in a brand new home and said...ahhh, it smells so new?

Well, what you may not know is that that "new" smell is most likely toxic.  That is because the majority of house paints have various levels of Volatile Organic Chemicals or VOCs.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, "Volatile organic compounds" are emitted as gasses from certain solids or liquids.  VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long-term adverse health effects."

The growing focus on "green housing" has resulted in the introduction of many brands of low-VOC or even no-VOC paints.  These paints, according to Greenfeet "release significantly fewer to no polluting toxins, and no-VOC paints are odor free.

Mythic Paint
While at the NC Home Builders Expo last week I discovered Mythic Paint which is a true "Non-Toxic" paint.

While many of the top paint companies have introduced or are planning to introduce low-VOC paints like Sherwyn William's Harmony, Mythic Paint is the only one I have found that claims that it is 0% toxic with no toxins, low odor AND has the ability to mix any color.  This is important because many of the low-VOC paints currently on the market have limited or lesser quality colors.

Mythic Paint products include: Primers, Ceiling, Flat, Eggshell (flat but cleanable), Semi-Gloss, High Gloss and even exterior Satin and Semi-Gloss.  Price will be a bit higher than many brand-name paints.

Here is a list of other Low- and No-VOC Paints:

AFM (American Formulating and Manufacturing) www.afmsafecoat.com

Benjamin Moore & Co. (Pristine® Eco-Spec® ) www.benjaminmoore.com

BioShield Paints www.bioshieldpaint.com

Devoe Paint www.devoe.com

Duron Paints and Wallcoverings (Genesis Odor-Free products) www.duron.com

Home Depot www.homedepot.com

ICI Dulux Paints www.iciduluxpaints.com

Kelly Moore www.kellymoore.com

Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company www.milkpaint.com

Sherwin-Williams (HealthSpec® paints) www.sherwin.com

The Green Home is more than just energy efficienct, it is healthy and more comfortable.  Your desire to make every effort to eliminate Volatile Organic Compounds may start with using No-VOC Paint. We will discuss other sources of VOC/indoor air pollutants in upcoming articles.

Diane, I have to say I paid more money for these and they were not all that they said....the odors were every bit as bad and I'm thankful I was out of the house.  Maybe they emit less time--but I used paints by Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams and it was unbearable in there for me.

Diane - Now this is something I did not know.  I plan on trying to make my home more energy efficient as I move forward.  There will probably come a time in the near future where I re-paint parts of my home, I will definitely keep this in mind.  In fact, when I'm ready to make some changes and advancements, I may be giving you a call:-)

We just painted our office and the odor took several days to subside. I would but the low VOC paint next time even if the odor was bad.

Carole:  I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience.  If these companies are correct, at least the odor would not be toxic.  However, some of the products put out by the large brands are not as good as someone like Mythic who is 0%.  Thanks for the feedback!

Jason:  I didn't know either until I started studying all about Green Housing.  There are even special loans for energy efficient homes!

Terry: Based upon what Carole said, you might want to try Mythic.  Let me know if you do!

Diane, we did use low VOC paint on the office - (guess who did the painting? 8-). It was Benjamin Moore's new Aura paint. Awesome paint, I would recommend it for high traffic areas for its cleanability. I didn't smell anything nasty - geez, the paint dries in less than 30 minutes.

Nice article, we should all be more aware of the things we use and bring into our home.

Personally, I'm a big fan of both Aura and AFM Safecoat (Mythic would need to be shipped a ridiculous distance to get to me in Edmonton). There are many more true 0-VOC paints from small manufacturers advertised in the pages of Natural Home magazine or stocked on the shelves of your closest green building supply specialists who are not listed here. A couple that spring to mind are C2's LoVo, and Yolo Colorhouse. haven't used them so I can't vouch for them, but they have a good reputation in green building circles.

To everyone who says they still had odor with their low-VOC paint: the trick is to find a manufacturer who also has a 0-VOC colorant system. By the time most manufacturers add even modest amounts of pigment to the can, they've added significant solvent concentrations to it. ALSO, the original legal definition of Volatile Organic Solvents from the EPA had to do with making ground-level ozone (aka smog), NOT their long-term effect on human health (think: sick building syndrome). So, technically a paint can be 0-VOC and still smell because it has lots of exempted solvents in it.

Also consider American Clay earth plaster as an alternative product to milk paint, especially if you're doing a nursery or have a chemically-sensitive client.

Bonnie:  Thanks for the feedback...I haven't used any of these products yet so it's great to learn from those that have!

Suzanne:  Thanks!

Deborah:  Great information!  I really appreciate your sharing so much important information about VOC and paint.

What a great list you have compiled, it's nice to see all of them in one place!  There are two other paint companies that may be of interest to youl.  Yolo Paints  www.yolocolorhouse.com  has a beautiful palette and is entirely VOC free.

Many of the paint companies listed are only NO VOC for the paint base.  The colorants or tints still have the same VOC's as before.  Yolo's colorants are VOC free as well.  The same with No VOC Glidden, which is the paint sold at Home Depot.

Lowe's has a No VOC paint by Olympic as well and it is the most well priced of all.
