Fried Foods at the State Fair… Just plain YUMMY!

My very favorite part of the State Fair has always been the food.  I love the rides and being a car nut I always spend time in the Automobile exhibit hall, but first and foremost, when I think of the fair, I think of the food... especially the fried varieties.

I wait all year for a Fletcher's Corny Dog (or two) and to find out what new fried concoctions they will come up with.  The Big Tex Choice awards were announced last month and my friend Linda Box Taylor even gave a great run down of this year's new fired food menu additions in her post State Fair of Texas and its list of crazy new fried food!.

One of the hardest parts of navigating the Fair is locating all the new fried goodies, so now, for all you State Fairgoers, here's where you can find them...

Texas Fried Jelly Beans:   Get them at Granny's Funnel Cake stand C6 at the south side of the Coliseum and C7 next to the Gateway Pavilion.

Deep Fried S'mores:  Get them at stand N9 located near the Embarcadero entrance.

Fire & Ice:  I can't wait to try this one!  Find it at the family-run stand on Nimitz Drive.

Fried Chocolate Truffles:  Can be found at the stand located on Nimitz near the entrance to the Creative Arts Showplace Theater.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Waffle Balls:  Can be purchased at the Belgian Waffle stand G39 located on the NE corner of the Esplanade.

For more Texas State Fair details be sure to check out the official website at www.BigTex.com!  And if you see me on the midway with a corny dog in my mouth, please be sure to say hi!  I'll grunt and wave back!

Hi Steve, I always have to get a corn dog and maybe a funnel cake to share - it is a guilty pleasure indeed! what is "fire and ice"?

Let's hope the weather stays as pleasant as it's been or even just a bit cooler for this year's fair.

Ohio State Fair is big on fried food too... I don't go.  I don't eat fried foods either... cause and effect? Which came first?  I think Texas is the biggest state fair in the US... remembering back to the 90's I think Ohio used to say it was the biggest... but it wasn't?  Everything is big in TX isn't it?

Hi Carol... The trick is to drink a glass of mile before you leave for the fair.  It coats the stomach before all the fried food!

Hi Linda... Oooo!  I like funnel cakes too.  And balloons.  Have fun!

Hi Karen... Fire and ice is a Pineapple ring, battered and deep-fried, topped with banana-flavored whipped cream that's been frozen in liquid nitrogen so it smokes.  The smoking concoction is ladled with strawberries and syrup.  What could be bad there?  I hope the weather stays this nice too... and don't forget to wear sunscreen if you go during the day!

You got me wanting to try it until you told me about the smoke.  Liquid nitrogen? I somehow recall that being used to burn (or freeze) off warts on my brother's knee when he was a young boy, I'm not kidding either... hummmmm..... nothing bad there? Is that safe to consume?  And why am I even asking? Because anything deep fried in lard or other hydrogenized product is really good for the heart too... State Fair here I come!

Karen:  Liquid Nitrogen vaporizes at room temp...  So there is nothing left after it is applied to freeze something (or so I am told).  I watched a David Letterman episode one time where they poured all the ingrediants for ice cream in a bowl, then added a few ounces of Liquid Nitrogen and stirred for a few seconds - Voila!  Ice Cream.  And since the stuff is probably pretty expensive to transport and deliver, it was probably some of the most expensive Ice Cream ever!

Steve, I'm surprised you did not mention the world famous State Fair Corn Dogs!  The Texas State Fair is usually held to celebrate my birthday you know.  When I lived in Dallas, I never missed the chance to have a corn dog on my birthday at the place with "BIG TEX" towering over me.

Hi Steve... Thanks for the Mr. Wizard explanation of liquid nitrogen.  I couldn't have explained it.  None of this is on my diet, huh?

Hi Kathi... Re-read it.  First sentence of the 2nd paragraph.  I LOVE A FLETCHER'S CORNY DOG!  I was unaware that we have your birthday to thank for the fair.  That's a great celebration... and how nice for the thousands of your friends to gather for it over a 24 day period! LOL.  Happy Birthday Kathi!  When is it actually?

This is not served at the fair; however there was a review of a restaurant in Dallas that served deep fried avocados.  How do you think that would go over?

Hi Richard... They actually did have that as a specialty fried item at the State fair either last year or the year before.  I remember because it was VERY difficult to find the one place that served it.  I love avocados and who doesn't love fried foods, so it was a winner in my opinion.  They served it with a ranch dipping sauce.  YUM!  I'm kind of surprised that it has not become a more widespread restaurant appetizer!  Hmmmm....

I don't know for sure but I think the Corny Dog was invented at the Texas State Fair!. I love all of that stuff and like to indulge on occasion!

Hi Russell... I am not sure where they were invented, but Fletcher's Corny Dogs are a State Fair of Texas tradition.  And a delicicous one at that! :)

SteveI was in town for the game over the weekend and managed to get to the fair for some artery clogging treats ...oh, the game yeah it was great but I was actually at the Tulsa-SMU Rugby game Friday night?!!? One other thing, there wasa comment here about deep fried avocados...Hudson's on the Bend here in Austin does a "Hot & Crunchy" version that is well delicious!
