Ocmulgee Indian Festival in Macon Georgia
There is an annual festival about 45 minutes from my home, yet I hadn't attended in years. While it wasn't the same as the last time I went, like so many other things in this world it has become so much more commercialized than I would prefer.... it is still a worthy place to visit and if you can come durning the Festival the 3rd weekend each September all the better.
There were lots of beautiful things on display made by native Americans... some from all over the country. My husband and I saw a lot of beautiful handcrafted pieces and bought his mom a really cool painting on a feather and framed nicely. The artist was from Cherokee. She signed and named the painting.
But other than the actual festival it's still a lovely place to visit. It's very moving to me to see the detail in the lodge. There is no real history about the seating order of each seat being higher and wider than the next.
I also appreciate that women were the land owners in these tribes. In fact we heard one story today about if you wanted a divorce the woman just had to put the man's belongings outside.
It's a great place to visit. If you have the opportunity please do.
