Is That The Real You I Am Looking At?

Is That The Real You I Am Looking At? Or is it someone else?

In July Gary Woltal wrote a blog post titled A Clown Has Many Masks.  I found this to be a very interesting topic because I used to clown with my dad and his clown troupe back in the day.  Even though it was short lived but that is another post.  Let me get to my point.

On Tuesday night I witnessed a real example of people that wear masks and so did you if you watched The Biggest Loser show.  Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels went out and invited their team members to the show.  All smiles and happy to see their invitees and their invitees were equally happy to see them and accept the invitation to the ranch. The Mask is on at this time form both parties.  The masks come off when the work outs begin though.  The trainers are all of a sudden not their happy selves.  They have turned into this evil, &$!#$!, you fill in the blank.  And now the happy invitees that were all smiles now are crying and swearing and wondering if they are going to get out of the ranch alive.  They either perform or else.  Floyd Wickman and the Sweathogs program had nothing on these guys.  I have heard stories about this program and it sounds like a cake walk compared to what these people are going thru.

I think that we need to look at this in light of our business today.  We have office trainers and mentors that need to take their nice guy masks off and show their real selves.  Maybe we need to sit down and take a real hard look at what we are doing and how we are operating our business.  I am thinking that Bob and Jillian are on the right track and we can learn from them on how to be more intense and focus on our goals, if we have them.  And if we don't have goals for our business health then maybe we should do something about it and get some written out to help get us back on track.

Ok the business may suck where you are but does that mean that we just sit back and do nothing?  I think not, I think that now is the time to get back to basics and even get outside of our comfort zone and do something different.  We cannot keep doing the same thing that we've been doing and expect a different result.  That's silly!

Now is the time to take off our Oh Woe Is Me Mask and put on our Let's Go To Work Mask and not take it off until we are the Biggest Winner!

Betina,

I agree we need positive reenforcement but, we still need a strong dose of reality in this business.  Sometimes please and thank you doesn't work, IMHO.

Gary,

Some how I knew that about that about you.  I agree with you wholeheartedly we have gone to sugar coating too many things in our training programs.

The mask needs to come off and get to business. We also need to be tougher with our clients they need to hear the truth.

Don - it is with interest that I watch the aging, reshaping, graying, balding and a litany of other changes happen overnight to some active/rainers pictures.

I'm afraid that with or without the masks, most people are hiding behind something. Fear is the biggest emotion that most people try to hide. And this market, and the overall economy is feeding people's fear. But I believe it's rebounding. Remember? I started this year with "Real estate is great in 2008" and I've had 3 closings in the last few weeks =)

This is definitely not the market to just sit back and do nothing in.. well, if you want to survive anyway.  I look at and reevaluate things we do daily to see where would could improve, especially since we're getting ready to take on the role of broker/owner again.

Terry,

I agree the truth is something that we need to be telling our customers the truth but, shouldn't we have been doing that all along?  It sorta reminds me of the line from A Few Good Men-----"You Can't Handle The Truth"!

Kathy,

Are you saying that I am "aging, reshaping, graying, balding and a litany of other things"?  Hmmm

Lisa,

Fear can paralyze a person and I agree with you that there are many that right now are paralyzed.  They need to get busy or they will soon be out of business.  My personal thought is that we can make our market better and you are a good example of that with 3 closings in the last couple of weeks.  But, the nay sayers would have us believe just the opposite that real estate is NOT great in 2008.  Keep up the good work ma'am.

Jesse,

That's right you are going back to the Broker/Owner role in just a couple of days.  You won't be able to sit back and wait for something to happen, not that you have been doing that tho.

Do have a question tho, are you seeing a lot of folks leaving the business?

As always my friend it is good to hear from you!

Elizabeth,

Great life lessons to be teaching your girls ma'am.  And it is just as important to be real.  That real love that you are talking about comes only from one place.  GBU ma'am.

We haven't seen a huge reduction in our ranks... yet.  I think we've lost perhaps 50 members from across the state.  I heard someone the other day say the number was closer to 100 but still, it's a relatively small number.  I'm surprised by that because as of tonight 35% of our local Realtor membership hasn't sold a single thing all year... another dozen or so have sold one or two homes.  I don't know how those are staying in the business.

in our business, real estate, mortgages, etc... we feel we need to wear the hat as the salesman , which means we need to act outside of who we are. The more we come to be ourselves, the better we become as professionals

Jesse,

We have seen about a 12% reduction in our ranks with more falling out before the end of the year.  Like your area there have been a lot that haven't sold anything all year.  Thank you sir for the update.

Not only that I believe that the public sees right through that mask and doesn't really appreciate it.

Hi Don - I missed the show but get the point. There will be more and more exiting the business. Attitude will be an important factor for those that survive.

Bill,  I agreee sir.  If we do not change our attitude towards the business our clients will see right thru it and we will soon be out of the business anyway!
