$25 and a New Name - Harper becomes Costa Mesa - Costa Mesa History

By

In 1920, the people of Harper came to the conclusion that their city needed a new name, a name that reflected where they lived rather than the name of the farm and farmer where it all started.

Costa Mesa

They decided to hold a contest and give a $25 prize to the winner.

It was determined that the best entry was made by Alice Plumer who was given $25 and the honor of renaming the city, Costa Mesa, meaning "coastal tableland" in Spanish.  This is an apt name for a city in which much of the land is on a plateau overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.

I like that it was an actual resident of the area who chose the name, not just some group of men smoking a cigar somewhere. Thanks for the story!

CareyCyara - Not only did she name Costa Mesa, the land that was her farm became a well-known park, but that's for another post.

Christine, great localism post. Nice to hear the history of other communities. I also like that a resident was the one to rename the town-$25 must have been a lot of money in the 20's.

Debbie - Thanks.  I enjoy the whole naming contest for local residents, and I'm sue $25 was a lot back then.
