Helping a Senior Move Part II

By
Real Estate Agent with Edina Realty

Yesterday I wrote about Helping a Senior Move Part I, this is the second chapter, and I'm sure there will be many more!

I just received a phone call from my senior client who, two days ago had decided he wanted to move back home.  Over the last couple of days he has had some important discussions with his family and miraculously, went to visit a senior independent living community.  His family expressed their concern about his returning home and living alone.  He decided (in part, I believe to keep the peace) to move to an independent living community.  He called me today to ask me to continue to prepare the house for the market.

I pushed back a little when he told me this (Geez, my broker would have a heart attack if he read this). I asked him what happens if he doesn't like the next apartment and the house is sold? He answered confidently "My dear, this is a great place, wait until you see it."  I asked him how he knows this next apartment would be better than the first? It seems the residents are younger, healthier and more active-plus, there's a swimming pool right across the street.

SWIMMING POOL?!?

My client says "Yes, my dear. I want to be close to a swimming pool so I can keep this 85 year old body in shape!"

So, there you have it.  Everything I thought I knew about senior housing (the cost, available subsidies, remaining close to home, appropriate health care services) doesn't matter. It is officially about the swimming pool!

Good for you Lisa, treat people just like you would want to be treated or want your parents treated.

My mother is 76 living alone in Baltimore.  She swims and has put her name and a deposit on an age restricted independent living development for when the time comes she can no longer tend her 100 plus roses, cut her lawn and shovel her sidewalk.  Take care, Christine

NICE TO SEE HAPPY ENDINGS FOR ALL...EVEN THE CARING REALTOR.I can't help but think of the movie COCOON where all the seniors revitalized their youth by swimming in a pool....yes I guess pools are right on that list of importance.

How refreshing to hear that you were concerned about whether this apartment would be better than the last.  We are of the same bent.  I don't know how many times I have talked myself out of a job because I was concerned that the client was indeed making the best decision!  It does pay off in referrals in the future.

George thank you for the kind words. You know how it is when you might have a difficult client in a difficult situation, when you genuinely "like" your client the amount of patience you can muster turns out to be easier than it sounds!

Jay - He *IS* your kind of Codger, Wise, sweet and full of piss and vinegar!

Christine - you hit the nail on the head.  I treat my senior clients the way I would want someone to treat my parents.

Maurice - I do not think this is the ending of this story just yet. I think this character might have a surprise or two left in him!  We'll see!

Bonnie - I'm sure there are agents out there that would put the transaction first...but when you're watching someone trudge through a grieiving process and who is filled with indecision, I can't imagine puting the house before their needs.

Wayne - My gut tells me this isn't the last reversal for this client.  He's going through a tough time and these things take time to mend.
