Superstition and Real Estate

By
Real Estate Agent with Novella Real Estate

Are you superstitious?  Black cats and the number 13 are problems for some, but not for me.  I have been even known to walk under a ladder in my time.  Of course I always look up, isn't that what any sane person would do?

I don't carry a rabbit's foot, nor do I bury St. Christopher statues in the front lawn of my listings. Broken mirrors,Kristal Kraft, Denver Realtor well I've broken my share, hummmm maybe that I need to review.

All of the above is silly superstition, of which I do not subscribe.

When it comes to real estate, well there are some things I do pay attention to.

  • Never count your commission chickens before they hatch.
  • Don't schedule showing appointments with new buyers just before lunch. If they can't wait until after lunch, there must be a rea$on why.
  • If the property is u/c and you are listing agent, don't put up the "sold" sign, until the day after closing.
  • When writing the ad, don't say "hurry, won't last" cause it will.
  • Don't put off a vacation in lieu of working with a buyer.  You'll miss your vacation and the buyer, won't buy.

For consumers

  • If you decide to list with your friend, chances are you will lose your friend and keep your house.
  • No matter how much your spouse says "it's ok to choose without me honey." Don't.
  • Figure it's ok to look first then get pre-approved.  That's s-d-r-a-w-k-c-a-b (backwards).
  • Assume the transaction will work that same as it did back home in ......

Superstition may not be foolish, sometimes it's just good common sense.

Great Blog!

I had a boss that use to say common sense isn't common. Maybe that is why many are so superstitious. If I add up the number of broken glasses or the number ladders, the rest of my life time and some will be filled with bad luck.

What some view as bad luck, I view a life's lesson.

I never write on a folder for that property until I have all the peperwork finished. I paper clip a card to it and keep the numbers and the status of the transaction unitl we are finished. You need to link my tow sites to yours and I did that a couple of weeks ago. You must have a superstitution on a total face until you are paid,LOL

Common sense really isn't common, as I've been trying to convince my husband for the last 30+ years.

Kristal,

It's a St. Joseph statue that's buried in the ground, upside down facing the house.

Supposed to work...and I suppose if you keep the listing and the statue long enough...it may sell.

So, who or what does St. Christopher protect?

Kristal,

Can you elaborate on the "don't show a buyer before lunch" point?

"before lunch" lookie lous tend to take advantage of agents, asking to see houses and hoping to get fed.  Buying lunch is fine when the customer is "real".

I think some people believe we have an "expense account account and a car" provided by the company.

First let me say I have no superstitions, poo, poo, poo.  I will never dig up (or let my sellers) St Joseph before the closing.  The sign never comes down before the closing.  I no longer ever take buyers out on a major holiday.  It never works out anyway.

When we used to have a board on which agents would put their pending deals, I never did.  It was a sure sign the deal would die.  Definitely don't count the money earned before the deal closes otherwise you may be crying in your beer.

And don't do a deal sheet until the closing is scheduled.  The only problem with this one is my addled brain forgets some significant details by then -- oh well.

There are some people who HAVE to leave from the same door that they entered.

Superstious or not, it wise to acknowledge... and in Geri's words, don't "poo poo" the others.

I love this Krista.  Keep up the good work.  I've had several nervous clients be calmed by my explanation of "real estate karma", but that's a whole other phenomenon.
