Don't name that road after me please

There was a recent bill in the Tennessee General Assembly that would rename U.S. Highway 43 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee "Fred Thompson Boulevard."

It seems that's not going to be happening now because the bill's sponsor received the following letter:

"April 2, 2007

The Honorable Joey Hensley
Nashville, TN 37243

Dear Joey,

I read where the naming of a segment of U.S. Highway 43 in Lawrenceburg after me is under consideration. I cannot blame anybody if there is hesitation to name another thing for another politician or former politician. But I must say that I am very appreciative of my friends in Lawrenceburg and Lawrence County who originally had this idea. The fact that they would want to do this is more important to me than the naming itself. My daddy's car lot was on that stretch of road, so it's special to me, but the fact is that I didn't build it and I didn't pay for it. The taxpayers did. So it is entirely appropriate that it remain U.S. Highway 43 the way I remember it when I was a boy. Therefore, I would request that you thank my friends and withdraw the naming bill.

I really appreciate your work on this and the great job you are doing for our people. All the best to you and your colleagues.

Sincerely.
Fred Thompson"

How cool is that.

I'm voting for Fred for President in 2008 whether he runs or not; he's much classier than anyone else, including non candidates as well.

That's very cool. It's rare to see humility in a politician. Thanks for sharing! I'd vote for him too if I were there.

He's likely going to be running for President of the United States in 08 Ryan; you can vote for him wherever you are (and please do).

Yes, we have a highway here named after a former congressman.

However, that former congressman (not a young man by any means either) was arrested in Florida for indecent exposure.

And that's what I think of every time I see that highway named after him.

Wow!  That is suprising to see from a politician.  Great to see that there are some humble politicians out there.

I've liked Fred Thompson ever since I first heard him as a congressman and as an actor.  I agree with him.  I don't think that anything that already has a name should be renamed.  I still call JKF Int. Airport lewild Airport, which had its first commercial flight back in 1948.  It's OK to name things after people, but please name something new.

We need ALL of the politicians to take note of this.  He is a true civil servant not a self promoting jerk like so many others.

Never heard of him but will be watching for him in 2008.  Hope he's good at raising money so he can get noticed!

Hi Jim, I also want to add that renaming a stretch of a roadway visitors are using maps to travel is quite confusing! In town our Hwy 70 is Arrendell and I always have to tell visiting buyers that the two are the same.

Good for him to pass this up, I like that his childhood memories are intact and that is all he needs.

Thanks for passing this along.  I know of too many sitting senators that have every road and building in their state named after them, it is refreshing to see someone buck the trend.
