Exactly this happened to me this week. I had gone with a website company, and it was understood there were no early cancellations, the deal was for a year, unless they turned out to be unable to perform.
So far so good. I have been with these folks for 2 1/4 years now, with no real complaints. The website is nice. I've asked in the past for help with SEO, and was told they didn't do that anymore. To make a long story short, I went with an SEO firm, and set up my website to get in front of buyers. There were problems, however, and they related to the way the website was set up. My SEO company requested they remove this feature; they could not. Thus, after 3 months, it was highly recommended I move to another supplier of websites, which I did. We moved everything over, and I sent my old website provider a note, requesting to end our relationship, since i could not optimize my positioning with the old website.
The poop hit the propeller. I was made aware of the fact that my contract had automatically renewed for a year 3 months ago. Of course, now they had all those things I had requested before, and were able to do miracles.But the real kicker was the renewal.
Basically, based on this contract, they renew every year. The problem I have is the fact that they don't feel they need to inform you. Shouldn't it be required that they tell you they are about to renew? You then make a decision.Leases work that way. Are these clowns able to get away with this, just because they wrote it into the contract? I don't know, but am checking the legality.
So...read your minimum 1 year contracts, and make a notation somewhere of the expiry date. Believe me, that's what I'm doing!
