Storms and Checking your house

We see plenty of storm preparing episodes on the news suggesting that we get flashlights, batteries, water, gasoline, etc. in place before big storms.  But what about our houses?  There's no doubt that major storms and their damages get more camera time than a young Hollywood star during a devistating disaster.  Don't let small storms foll you, they can cause damage to your house too.

Before the Storm:  Check all (aluminum) flashing.  Make sure it is nailed securely to the facsia.  Make sure all caulking is tight with no cracks, gaps, or holes.  If wood or composite siding is present, make sure it has been painted to prevent water from penetrating and damages the siding. If you have vinyl siding, make sure it is all secure with no loose flaps that can blow off.  Make sure that all singles tabs are installed and flat on the roof, with not pops or buckles.  If you have a house with old single paned windows, make sure that no windows are cracked, if they are tape the cracks to reduce the chances of glass flying accross the room if the presure changes suddenly. Clean all gutters so that water runoff can flow freely through the drainage system. Tie down any lose porch/deck furniture or decorations to prevent damage to the house.

After The Storm:  It is common for shingles, flashings, and siding sections to blow off.  Make sure that if any of these have blown off to get the repaired as soon as possible.  If debris such as pine needles and branches has landed on the roof, clean it.  When storms produce high winds and any amount of rain, sometimes water can get in around doors and windows.  Over the next few days watch for stains to appear in the drywall, wood trim, hardwood floors or carpet.  It may take several days for the water stains to show up.  If stains do appear, have a contractor investigate immediately, there is no telling how severe the damage could be.  Without repair it will only get worse over time.

A good schedule of routine maintainance will greatly reduce the chances of damages from  most storms.  Home owners should check their houses at least twice per year and conduct any repairs and cleanings accordingly.
