Seeking agents.com FAKE lead

By
Real Estate Agent with Tarbell Realtors

I have a bone to pick with this website.  I am wondering if you agree with me or not.  So I heard about this website through Active Rain and I registered with them.  I received my first lead through them on Saturday.  Basically someone puts in a proposal and whether they are looking to buy or sell.  You put in what you are willing to do for them and then if they pick you then you are supposed to go back and pay to get their contact information.

Anyways this one lead #1019 (you are communicating anonymously until they pick you).  They submitted a selling proposal.  I get alerted that a possible lead in my area was available so I submitted my proposal.  I submit my commission amount and any other pertinent information, such as marketing and website presence.  Lead #1019 came back and wanted to find out more about me and so I went into further detail with them and told them what I would specifically do for them.  Now I should also add that they stated their zip code in which they wanted to sell (90210) and their home was worth around 1 to 2 million, so I submitted my information.  On Sunday night when I checked my e-mail I was told that Lead #1019 had picked my proposal and to proceed and checkout.  I went to the website, eager to find out the contact information and put my payment information in.  Once I put the information in, I saw that the phone number was bogus (1231231234) and their name was Dan.  They had an e-mail address that didn't seem awkward but was kind of funny.  I immediately felt like I had been had.  The lead cost me $25 (which I didn't think was too much) and I thought maybe this will pan out.

I thought about it all night, after e-mailing the person my contact information.  I wrote in the e-mail that they can contact me or send me your contact information.  I just happened to think about looking up the seeking agents website on Active Rain and I did.  Guess what I found.  I found the founder trying to recruit agents to sign up on his website and his name was DAN.  I kind of started thinking that the names being identitical was to much of a coincidence.  I typed him a comment on Active Rain and was hoping for a reassurance from him that his lead would be legit.  Sidenote:  Before you pay for your lead it tells you that they cannot enforce fake leads and they try their best not to let that happen.  DAN never typed me back so I decided to e-mail him directly.  I told him about the scenario and he immediately refunded my money back and said that I had paid for a TEST lead.  I wrote back and said who has test leads and doesn't tell you up front.  He said that some people would have kept quiet and kept it.  I told him kept what?  A FAKE lead.  It turns out that HE (DAN) the founder of this website was the one who wrote the lead.  I can understand testing out leads and all that but why not tell me it was a test lead.  Not only that don't let me pay for it with REAL money not FAKE money.  I also don't understand leading someone on that way (he wrote back to me asking me to go into further detail about my service, REMEMBER!).

I don't know if his website is legitimate, but I thought I should write about my experience since I was looking for a blog like this before I paid for the lead.  BE CAREFUL in what you pay and I hope that you have found my FAKE lead information useful and helpful?

You may want to go over and check out the post I wrote this week (members only) that is on the featured page.  The bottom line is research all of the information you see on AR and research before you jump.  Not all the advise you see here is good advise nor is it accurate.  Your experience is just another reason why we all have to be careful.  Fortunately you got your money back!

Carol, if you're going to rip my service this badly for a mistake, I think it would be fair to at least MENTION that I refunded you the money for the lead and apologized as soon as you brought the problem to my attention.

Usually I test in a zip code in Alaska but absent-mindedly typed 90210 when I was inputting a lead to test a couple new features on the website. I just want to make this clear.

Thanks,
Dan

Okay so Dan apologized after I brought it to HIS attention and this is when he said that some agents would have kept quiet and kept the lead.  He did say that he refunded my money but since my statement has not come in yet I am not sure whether he has or not.

Bottom line Dan, I just don't think you should lead people on with FAKE leads like you did, period.  I would venture to say that most real estate agents would agree with me.

Carol,

I think you may have misunderstood. I didn't say some agents would have kept quiet and kept the lead. I said "I refunded your money right away, some people would have kept quiet and kept IT" (IT meaning: the money not the lead). Re-read the e-mail, you'll see what I mean.

Also, it wasn't a FAKE lead, it was a TEST lead that ended up in your zip code by mistake.

Anyway, my apologies for the trouble this caused you.

Best of luck in your work and on your blog.

Dan

obviously Dan is not happy that I called him out on his service or disservice he is giving real estate agents.  Everyone needs to make their own decision and tell me what you think.
