IS MODERN TECHNOLOGY WORTH HAVING AN ACCIDENT OVER???

By
Real Estate Agent with Johnson Real Estate, Inc. RES.0761759

Today when I was out, I was following behind a vehicle that was swaying left and to the right.  I'm thinking (native as l am) that it is either a driver that is tired or drunk.  Either way I backed off giving them and myself enough space.  The next thing I knew the car went over the middle line and hit the oncoming vehicle.  I stayed until the police showed up.

The vehicle that crossed the line was being driven by a young girl (in her 20's) I guess.  She was so shaken up, and couldn't believe this happened to her and was in tears.  The other vehicle was only slightly damaged on the drivers' door.. thank goodness.

Are you wondering what happened?  What caused the accident?  The girl was texting as she was driving. I wanted to ask her.. "Was that text message more important than your life".  Was it so important that it was worth getting into this accident?  What about a lawsuit?  Does anyone think about this before they text and drive.

Valerie, did this happen after I saw you at the office today???

Kids I don't know what goes on in Kids minds.  She isn't going to like her next car insurance bill.

George.. Yes, this did happen after you stopped by the office.  I'm just glad no one was hurt.

I didn't think of her car insurance.. I was thinking would she still have a license?

Valerie - I see this all the time. I've never text and don't think I will. With all the traffic on the road  it takes all my attention and then some.

Hopefully, this was a wake-up call for this girl. If she chooses not to learn by her mistake the next time she may not be so lucky...

Valerie - You are fortunate to have backed off when you did and I'm so happy to hear that no one was seriously hurt as a result of this accident.  Too many young people today for some reason don't consider the consequences of their sometimes very impulsive actions.

Carl & Ceil.. With all the vehicles on the road, I couldn't imagine even trying to text, and they thought cell phones were bad.

Teresa.. What does this say for the way society is going?  It might be a wake up call for this girl, but what about everyone else that does texting?

Donna... Most of these young people have grown up with gameboys, DS's etc. They don't know any different.  When they get behind a wheel they problem think it is like a video game.. they'll walk away from it.  What happened to realizing this is a machine they are driving, not a toy.

OMG Valerie - I'm glad nobody was hurt.  I usually walk to the office and I am always amazed at the amount of drivers that pass me and I can clearly see they are not looking at the road - but looking at their cell phone while they text...ugh.   It was very kind of you to stay with the girl - hopefully she won't be texting while driving again.

Kara...Who knows if she'll be driving again. She might not have a license? Don't know.  It is just so scarry driving now adays.  There is such a big push not to drink and drive.. but what about talk and text?  Hmm.  What is the difference.  Accidents can happen with both.valerie osterhoudt

Debi.. It is really getting scarry to go on the road now adays.  Here in CT it is illegal to talk on the phone without an ear piece while driving.  I can't tell you how many people I have seen talking with out it this past week.

I was walking across a parking lot, and almost got hit by a car turning into the row.. why, she was talking on the phone and NOT paying attention.

Valerie - Every time my husband sees someone driving unsafely with a cell phone to their ear, he says, "Hang up the phone and drive!"     :)

Debi.. Too bad there isn't a number you can call to report people talking on cell phones.  But then again, it would be their word against yours.

Valerie - Great Post! I think alot of people young and old who are so wrapped up in themselves they forget there are other people on the road too. I have seen so many people cross lanes not looking because they are trying to make a call or are reaching for something and take their eyes off the road for a split second, so they think.  Hopefully, she learned a very valuable lesson.
