It's 4:00 AM!

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

Deep in slumber at 4:00am HAWAIIAN ISLANDS TIME the phone rings. By the second ring I wake up to actually know that I wasn't still dreaming. Then I bark out loud (asking no one in particular), "What the hay"? I scramble to answer the phone and seemingly miss the call. I check the 'recent incoming calls' and see that it is a long distance number.

Riiinggg!GRRRRRRR.

We already know what this call is. A telemarketer that left no message and did not take into consideration the time zones.

I get back to sleep in 10 minutes and at 5:15am I wake to the coffee brewer beeping that it's time for us to get up and drink a cup of that freshly brewed coffee.

After showering and getting ready I plop in my chair in front of my pc (hubby already turned both ours on) with the cup of coffee (that Gary made for me too :).

I search for THAT number in google and whitepages.com. No luck. I call the number registered on my phone.

A recording of Countrywide in NEW JERSEY.

I hang up... and ponder upon the same question that pops in my head when this happens time and time again.

Don't these people take into consideration that we are SIX hours behind them on the east coast?

PLEASE have some respect for others and their time zones for each number you are selfishly plugging away into your phone.

I don't know about it being different when it is family. Maybe more easy to get over but still just as annoying.  MY family is all in the same time zone I am (relatively) but they STILL decide to call late at night or super duper early in the morning.  My husband's mother calls us religiously after 11 p.m.  Very aggravating.  But the telemarketers...they do it intentionally, I believe. Catch you off guard so you can make a rash decision and sign up for something that will cost you $850/month and you can't get out of it for a year.  Sneaky ones, they are.

All I can say is "OH MAN"  They should not call at all but not to have a progrma in place to deal with time zones is irresponsible!  I would email the CEO!

Renae: No matter what...that one time I turned it off and there would be an emergency

Paddy: Funny...when I finally get the nerve to just hang up....I get one I am too sleepy to answer!

Neal: Remember the time you did that recorded message?  Those I don't mind.....but to call at 4am is something different.  YOU WILL understand once your daughter grows up and leaves home. You won't turn your ringer off.

I agree with you Sally.  My parental units are older, my 3 sisters are all, well, um, bone-heads, and my husband often works nights. Not to mention my kids often spend the night at other people's houses.  NEVER turn it off.  You just never know.

Sally - I would register with the do not call list. That is so annoying! I have registered and still get calls - invariably right at dinner time . . .

Renae: Yup...I won't just for that fact...and when they call ... hoping we're just that type I won't listen and I won't buy....so why call? :)

Sharon: I did. And just like you...still get the calls.

Sally- That is so rude! Just goes to show they are thinking only of themselves. Their world is their world and from that point of view they don't even consider there may be other time zones in the world!

Hi Sally,

I guess they don't consider time zones. If you are on the do not call register report them. They have already been sited for violating the register. Won't get the lost sleep back, but it will be one step closer to preventing them from continuing the practice.

It never ceases to amaze me that our clients sometimes do not have the slightest idea of the rude behavior they sometimes exhibit. I do not think they would do this to any oother profession but there are so many that just hop, skip and jump to get a customer. Its embarrassing and frustrating. Ok this is not as negative as it sounds, I am just popping off because you hit a nerve!

Russell: Some just don't care. I know I wouldn't call them to ask if they have a client for me...so what's the deal?

My husband works midnights so before I turned off all the ringers on the phones at the house he was always getting some kind of sales pitch while trying to sleep. He started asking for the sloicitors home # so he could call them back while he was at work. We are on DO NOT CALL but so many companies try to work some route around it by saying it is a survey or something to that effect. And now with elections I am expecting a boatload of candidate calls in a couple weeks.

I feel for you, I'm grumpy if one of my children wake me up at 4 AM and they usually have a valid reason!!!

Sally, Your post reminded me that I hadn't put my new cell phone number on the do not call list.  Thanks for the reminder.  As for telemarketers, unfortunately, the computer generator probably doesn't know how to tell time.

Sally - I got rid of my land-line phone years ago. My cell is set to vibrate at night so I can easily ignore it - if it vibrates for 2 calls in a row, then I know it is important and reach for it -
