Back to the Future with Renewable Energy -> Green Ohio Jobs?

Isn't it interesting that old ways of harnessing energy from our planet are coming back into style after years out of the spotlight?  Some of the older - and cleaner - forms of converting kinetic energy to electrical energy are getting another look.

Most who are interested in Green concepts know about the renewed interest in wind energy using sleek, futuristic-looking windmills that are very different in style from the old ones we remember from Don Quixote movies and depictions of the Netherlands.

Another old standby, hydroelectric power, is also getting some attention - in this case for its potential to create jobs.  The news source Business First of Columbus reports that there are plans A hydroelectric dam - New Zealandto expand the use of hydroelectric plants along the Ohio River.

The Columbus-based power company American Municipal Power-Ohio has ordered turbines for power plants along the river from a York, Pennsylvania manufacturer, and there may be another factory added in the state of Ohio.

So, this interest in cleaner and Greener power can be a source of new jobs as well as cheaper power, and there is a broader plan by AMP-Ohio to expand the portion of its power that comes from renewable sources - in fact, the plan is that there will be FREE power in 35 years from the hydroelectric sources when their debt service has been retired.

Who couldn't like that view of the future?

Wow, Suzanne - what a concept!  FREE energy...  Who would we give all of our money to for supplying us with said energy at that point?  Now I'm going to agonize over it for the next 35 years! LOL  Seriously, that is an awesome goal for them to have and even if they don't reach the goal of absolutely FREE energy, they will have brought us all soooooo much closer to it!

Thanks for the comment Richard - the only trick for those high paying jobs however is finding people with the specialized credentials to get them.  At my husband's company they can't always find enough *qualified* employees for their openings.  It's a tricky employment world out there.

Renae, it's interesting isn't it...there is great potential for reducing our dependency on foreign oil and on coal power if we just act in that direction!

Why is it that so many people fight the windmills?  I think they're kind of cool looking and they are great sources of energy.

It certainly seems like a great opportunity for our economy to produce jobs, especially for areas that desperately need them.  Will then help housing markets as well !  Great post - hopefully things can move relatively fast with a lot of these projects and proposals.  At least both presidential candidates promote the growth as well.
