Wow! I can't believe that summer is already over!
Fall is definitely in the air, though. Goodbye to the days of 90+ degrees!
I just love the fall season! The humidity is low and the temperatures are so comfortable. It's enjoyable to be outside and not break a sweat as soon as you step out the door.
And as with the change of any season, there is plenty to be done around the house. Now is the time to start preparing for the colder months to come.
Here are a few things to get you started in preparing your home for the upcoming seasons:
- Have a certified HVAC professional inspect and maintain ducts, filters, and heating equipment.
- Mulch around trees and shrubs, prune perennials, and move all tropical plants indoors.
- Schedule a chimney inspection and cleaning. Also check for leaks and install a screen to keep out birds and debris.
- Clean, oil, and sharpen garden tools before storing them.
- Empty the gas tanks to your lawnmower and weed-eater.
- Store hoses and other yards items that you won't be using in the garage or shed.
- Schedule a roof inspection to check for loose shingles, weather damage, and leaks around vents and skylights.
- Clear gutters of any debris and repair them if needed.
- Apply a weather sealant to any decking.
- Replenish propane or oil tanks.
- Insulate any exposed outdoor pipes and water faucets.
- Clean and vacuum vents, ducts, and other heating components regularly, and make sure you replace the furnace filter every three months.
