Jump in the car and head to the 42nd Annual National Apple Harvest Festival at the South Mountain Fairgrounds, just 10 miles northwest of historic Gettysburg. Join the fun during the first two full weekends of October from 8 am to 6 pm daily, rain or shine. Admission for the event is only $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, free for children under 12; parking and shuttle service are included in the price of admission. South Mountain Fairgrounds is located near Arendtsville on Route 234.
The National Apple Harvest began in 1961 as the "1st Apple Harvest Holiday" under the Adams County Fruitgrowers Association and Donald Trostel and Clair Fetters. In 1965 the Upper Adams' Jaycees, under the direction of Cochairmen Robert Reed and Mac Lott debuted the Apple Harvest Festival. Featured attractions at the Festival were an antique car display, the apple cider press (which is still used today), an apple butter boil, pony rides, orchard bus tours, apple desserts and other products, commercial displays, souvenirs, the Apple Blossom Queen, and a Dutch style meal. By 1975, the festival expanded to two full weekends.
