Ride a bicycle!

Besides being FUN, it is great exercise, saves on gasoline (quickly becoming a precious commodity), saves money, Gives a fresh perspective, is intentional and deliberate (meaning it forces you to see and experience a city, make that community in much more organic way. It saves on pollution and is "green". In some instances, it is faster than waiting around in traffic.

Most cities are bicycle friendly with well marked paths for bicycle commuters. Portland Oregon, for instance not only encourages bicycling but they make it easy for their commuters to do it, with biker friendly laws, rights of way and even "On Street Parking" for bikers.

Some pre-cautions for your safety.

Wear a helmet.....hat may seem obvious, however most cities do not have laws requiring the use of helmets and the dangers of a bicycle accident far outweigh not wearing them.

Keep your bicylce "tuned-up".

Many accidents occur because of poorly maintained equipment.

Know the local laws

Bicycles share the road with pedestrians, cars, trucks, vans, etc. and must use caution when traveling. In most cases the laws are designed to protect the commuter bicyclist. Follow the rules of the road. Take heed of the traffic signals. When the traffic stops, stop with them. Red lights are for cyclists too. Not heeding these laws can be very dangerous.

Go with the flow of traffic and stay on designated bicycle lanes. Simple enough!

Understand the signals.

Right and left hand turns have their own signals. Learn them and make sure your children know them also. If you are going to ride at night, invest in a light kit assembly. Many bicycle outfitters have the proper equipment and it is easy to install. Just as it is crucial for cars and trucks to warn others on the road what their intentions are before making a turn, it is even more critical for a cyclist.

The bottom line

Bicycling is tons of fun! Enjoy it and be safe. I promise it will enhance your experience in your city or community.

Great timing, I just checked out my city (well, one of the nearby ones) and "discovered" a bunch of old west history that I never knew existed there. It was a lot of fun!

Btw, I see you finally caved and posted a picture... Nice to meet you face to face -- kinda -- and hats off to you for holding out for so long!

Bo, would you mind coming to Eugene and teaching the bicycle riders about safety. How about the right of away rules of gross tonnage? (He with the most gross tonnage has the right of way.) I swear the bike riders here have a death wish.

I would be scared to death to ride a bicycle on the streets of my community.  There are some wonderful trails though that would be terrific for a bike ride.

Fred, Oh, not good! Well, perhaps that should be something that I could carry a torch for.....god knows, if things continue in the line they are going, bikers will be much more prevalent and are going to need it. The flip side of that is cars won't be.....Thanks...Bo

Rebecca, Stay on the trails. Safety should never be over-rated. Thanks...Bo

When I first moved to Chicago 10 years ago, I got on my bike and started to ride through the different neighborhoods to better familarize myself with the city. Riding your bike is great exercise, good for the environment, and just plain fun! Thanks for the post Bo.

Before I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I did a lot of bicycling. You're right. It's a great way to get a better perspective on things. But now I've started walking. I was forced to slow down because of illness, but I'm amazed at how much I can see by walking. I can't cover as much territory, but I sure do see a lot more.

Hey Bo,

As a kid, I spent lots of time on a bicycle.  I haven't ridden my bike in a couple of years.  You have reminded me of how much fun it can be.  I will have to get back out there.  Thanks.

Have a great day

Leander
