Why Do You Share Your Knowledge and Your Success Secrets?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with 3:16 team REALTY ~ Locally-owned Prosper TX Real Estate Co. #9001154

Are you afraid of sharing industry success secrets? Are you hoarding knowledge so that your competitors cannot compete with you? Are you a sponge only to absorb what others have to give and share? These questions constantly run through my mind when I write posts about Blogging. My honest answer is No. I wrote a blog about "Why write Member's Only posts" and the majority of the responses (suited for this post) include not sharing industry secrets with the "public" perhaps local competitors who are also here on Active Rain. While I can understand that fear, here are some of my thoughts about blogging while educating those around you (mostly Active Rain members and some of them are your local competitors). I will write this in the What's In It For Me Principle, so that you can really see the benefits when you share what you know.

The first and most important WIIFM concept - As you share, you network. When you write about the business "secrets" that lead you to success, you become a blogger that every reader/ member wants to subscribe to. As clear examples, see:

#1 Brad Andersohn of Fairfield, CA
#2 Nestor & Katerina Gasset of Wellington, FL real estate
#3 Jason Crouch of Austin, TX real estate
#4 Justin Smith (Justin is not a real estate agent but comes from the SEO background)
#5 Rich Jacobson of Silverdale, WA

Note: There are many more great bloggers here on Active Rain. I just do not have time to list ALL of them. Each of them has a unique quality of why they become a successful blogger.

These are Active Rain bloggers who consistently remain the top spots of Most Subscribed To. Why? Because they provide and share information they know. They did not just continuously blog about their cities and communities solely for business opportunities. They take time to educate ALL of us here on Active Rain. What place will this be - if they hadn't done this? Another blogger who gets this job done eloquently is Broker Bryant Tutas. He has his ways of writing about his city - Poinciana, FL and he educates the rest of us - who otherwise don't know much about his city.

Now, if you had a client who wants to move to Austin, TX or Wellington, FL, who do you think will get the first pick? I hear ka-ching, ka-ching at the end of the register! Need I say more?

As you provide education through your blogs, you build a readership - in my very own words, a rah hah ha fan club. These people becomes your friends and allies all across the country. How confident do you sound when you talk to your relocation prospects that you carefully and intentionally build your network of real estate experts across the country. How would they like to work with an agent expert in their area to assist them with their housing needs?

Did you think they were afraid that someday their local competitors would implement ALL their ideas? Do you really think even when shown the exact formula, that your competitor would yield the same results? We all have our different personalities, different likes and dislikes. Through your writings, you attract different clienteles from the next one in line. I wrote about it too, "Your blogs attract the types of clients you want to work with".

As you share, you learn, you give and you transform yourself. This is the emotional side of helping others while you help you. As you blog about the things you know, others who leave comments educate and share what they know. Or they might choose to re-blog using your post as their platform to expand their thoughts. Then, there is nothing more noble than to have a giving heart. As you learn to share and give, you become a better you (no need to read Joel Osteen's books here). The comments and feedbacks that you receive can and will fuel you to give and share even more. It's addicted and it's a great chain reaction here to start on Active Rain.

If you did not share the information (like some of the great bloggers here on Active Rain do), this place will not be as educational and as valuable. This place becomes a sponge that only absorb information. I simply do not think that we repeatedly come here on Active Rain just to read about where the next best place to eat or live - if that was the only information provided. Only taking in and never giving back is no way to contribute to those around you (and your society).

There is also a spiritual reason behind why you should share. Read about it here: Lessons of Tears about Friendship, Sharing and Growing a Business (my very own difficult lesson). It was a great lesson I had learnt in the past but it came at a very high price. When you get a few minutes, I would strongly encourage you to find your way there. It changed my views about sharing and I hope it might give you a different perspective about this topic too.

Much to your success...

Great post and I could not agree more.  The more we unselfishly give, the more that comes back to us.  Besides, we could give away our "secrets" all day long and we are still so unique, it won't take anything away from us.  As I say, I don't want or need ALL the clients out there, only a few.  ;-)

Loreena, we really like the way you think and write.  So true... the nice aspect of one's blog is that one can let out their thoughts and creativity and really not have to worry about the competition.  I think what one gives they get back that much more.

I remember thinking when I got into the real estate business 26 years ago in November 1981, that I was entering a "cut-throat" business.

My first office, had about a dozen old-timers in it, and I was the rookie.  Imagine, my shock when I asked the question, "What's the interest rate these days?"  The answer was an incendiary 18%.  I thought how can I sell real estate in a market like that?  The agent behind me, told me to look for the 1 in 20 houses, which had an assumable loan, with a low interest rate, but little equity.  That way, with a buyer who had a little money for a down, you could do a loan assumption, and if need be - possibly put on a second for a few years.

Without that 3-minute suggestion from that agent, I wouldn't have even gotten my "career" off the ground.

Next came another agent, who walked me over to the supply drawer, and helped me assemble a Buyer package, and a Listing package.  Again, it was other experienced agents in the office, who mentored me to my beginning success.

I was in that office for the next 10 years, until it closed its office to the California real estate bust of 1991.  But, over the years, I repaid those helpful agents, with helping them tend their escrows, when they went on vacation, or letting in an occasional appraiser, home inspector, or termite repairman, etc.

As far as tricks of the trade, or tools of the trade - What I've found over the years, is there are certain basic truths to what we do to be successful in this business.  However, it is our personality, and unique characteristics that ultimately set us apart from one another, that will have us appealing to one client, and perhaps not another!

I always make an effort to share my "tricks of the trade."  More often than not, I've received more in return, which occasionally I evolve into my own style and presentation.

At the end of the day, I think we are all the better for it!

Loreena, I don't have the secrets to blogging or technology, I am here to learn as much as I try to share.  I have a lot of good hard marketing ideas that I give openly to agents who constantly come to me to ask me what it is I do.  You know, I show them everything I do and I would say 99% never try any of the things I share with them?  I just can't figure it out.

Blogging can be different, not all of us are poets, we just have to be ourselves and like you said we will attract people that relate to us.

I like your attitude. I have shared some of the ideas that have helped me in my business here at Active Rain and I enjoy doing so. Surprisingly,no one in my market utilizes the tips and sometimes I hear from others in different parts of the country that have tried them out and had some success. I agree with you that a lot of my favorite bloggers are some of the best at sharing information and help with both our business and the workings of Active Rain. Thanks for this very articulate post!
