This post stems from a previous blog, Why Do You Share Your Knowledge and Your Success Secrets?. As I have laid out many reasons why you might want to share what you know, I want to specifically highlight the spiritual reason of sharing. I feel of ALL the benefits I included, the spiritual reason is by far the most important reason why you might want to do that.
I have a lesson to share about this too. It happened several years ago when I was in real estate for just a few years. I was dabbling with transactions here and there. I certainly did not classify myself as a success so I went to seek help of another friend who is also a real estate agent. Her work area coincides mine. As I asked her for help that afternoon, she turned her face and said this to mine,
"I cannot tell you what brought me success. If I teach you what I know, you WILL be in competition with me".
Did you know how much those words crushed my heart that afternoon? She, of all people is my sister-in-Christ. I loved her as a dear friend, by the true definition of a friend. There would be nothing I would withhold from her and if our roles were switched that day, I could never hesitate to share. I was taken by surprise that that was her response.
In many ways, I was honored when she viewed me as her competitor. She believed that I had the capability to challenge her. That was my only refuge in light of this encounter. I went home that day truly heart-broken, not because I did not get the secrets behind her success and could not emulate her. I was heart-broken because of her un-sharing attitude.
These are my lessons from the pit and here is what I told myself when I could share and help someone someday:
Matthew 6:25-34:25 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? 28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? 31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. 34 So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.
[I wrote this scripture as a comment response to Terry Rasner-Yacenda's blog on The Family of God and the Family of Humanity - An Impossible Choice?]
I believe with ALL of my heart that I will serve those I am called to serve. I do not need to withhold any "secret" information - thinking that by having that information, I become more superior. God knows my needs much better than I do (my needs and my wants most likely do not coincide with God's plans for me - I'm sure). He will supply my clients and He is the fuel of my business. I have no fear that if I shared my information, that I would lose a client(s) because of it. This is the TRUST I place in not my own ability but God.
It took me many, many years to build this spirit. Even though I am not "there" yet, (as I falter back and forth at times), I have been doing well maintaining holding on to this lesson.
So, there you go. A complete rationalization from the business and spiritual side of Why You Might Want to Share Your Knowledge and Success Secrets.
Much, much to your success...
