I need a breather. And I want to breathe the best air in the world! And that means the Great Smoky Mountains!

Great Smoky MountainsEvery October I take several trips to The Great Smoky Mountains National Park to photograph the change of the seasons. In the Southeast, the mountains and autumn are intrinsically intertwined. The brilliant leaf color, the cooler temperatures, and the abundance of visible wildlife all contribute to a rejuvenating experience.

And it's not just the sights that draw me either. It's the smell of the new fallen leaves, the autumn blooming flowers and the fragrance of the cascading brooks and rivers. Every breath recharges and renews, and goes deep within the spirit.

And there are fall tastes as well. Anything apple: apple cider, apple fritters and fried apple pies! In the south, we also enjoy a big sack of boiled peanuts while we are on the road. The best are made in a big black kettle over an open fire. The mountains are also associated with huge country breakfasts of ham, eggs, hash browns, grits, biscuits and lots of gravy! Oh and pancakes too, we mustn't forget the pancakes.

Great Smoky Mountains National ParkBut, sad to say, this year might be different. Downturns in the real estate market have made discretionary cash very limited. It is also unnerving to "hit the road" with an uncertain supply of gasoline. In our part of the country, only one in twelve stations have gasoline to sell, and when you get it, it's a long wait at the pump.

And two years of drought have taken their toll. The water level in the streams and rivers is very low, sometimes just a trickle. Also, the drought makes the leaves a little browner and a lot less colorful. Not only is that bad for the vegetation and the ecosystem, is isn't the best scenario for the dedicated photographer.

I will find a way, somehow, to make my annual treks. It's the only way I can revitalize my spirit! I must. I need to breathe!

If there is any place more beautiful than the Smokies, I haven't seen them.  The Rockies may be more dramatic, but don't offer the changing scenes offered by the Smokies.

Beautiful photos, as always.

Mel...

Traveling is too much of hassle now. If you go to NYC you need to plan a week, just to try enough different restaurants. I am going to blitz a lot of fall photos, be ready!

Susan...

The key is knowing where NOT to be ... I am going to write a post about photography in the Smokies!

Lenn...

The Rockies are too "new" for me! I love everything Appalachian, and especially the Park. I can't wait to get there! I'm glad you like the photos, more are coming!

Richard, some years are off years, what can I say? Do the best you can to make the trek (if you can find the gas). The Smokies are a beautiful area. I have traveled the Blue Ridge Hwy many times in North Carolina. We all need a breather.

Richard, you brought back some wonderful memories for me of living in Virginia and taking a trip over to the Blue Ridge Parkway each autumn to see the beautiful scenery, buy apple cider, and enjoy the nice crisp air.

Richard - the distressed landscape can also make beautiful pictures. There will be formations in the rivers and streams that you have never seen before because of the low water. I hope you get at least one trip up there. Looking forward to the results.

And the Rockies do offer that changing seasons that the Smokies do. Having been to both, I will say that I am partial to the western mountains, but the Appalachians are terrific in their own right.

Gary...

You have to know where the "hotspots" are in all conditions, and I have found the best spots over 35 years!

Shirley...

I do love the aroma and taste of freshly pressed cider! YUM

Mike...

I like the age and diversity of the Appalachians. There are more species of trees in the Park than on the entire continent of Europe!

Bob...

And lots more are on the way, thanks!

Richard, just rent a horse. No need for gas and he can eat the brown grass along the way. Don't forget the bacon and beans. Have a great time!

Richard.... times might be tough, but if we don't get way and recharge our spirit we'll go completely nuts...  I would love to take some time to wander through the smokies with you... cameras in hand.  Our fall was so short... I'll be photographing snow before the week is out I bet.

Richard-I hope you get your breather. What a awesome post. That pic is outstanding. Fall is such a beautiful time of year. I just love fresh cider and it wouldn't be complete without the donuts. Keep the faith.

I'm ready... lenses, filters, batteries, chargers, monopod and camera...all packed and ready to go.  Kathy's folks have a place at Lake Toxaway in western NC... What I wouldn't give to be there hiking through the mountains right about now.

Think of the renewed energy you will feel and that will put the cost into perspective.

I'm always afraid of possible misleading title.

The Great Smoky Mountains being beautiful, yes

You live here and you love it? no question...

The air being high quality, OK

But being "the best in the world"...umm...

Did you try Alaska's air? Alps' air? what about Amazonia's air? or Andes's air?

This is unfortunately an easy Real Estate agent-ish (or even car salesmen ) deviation that I tend to avoid, with all the respect, of course...
