Gardening --Mole Problem

Do you have a problem with moles making tunnels?

Wind Tunnels.  Sink a line of glass bottles into the ground with an inch of the neck sticking out.  When the wind blows across the top of the bottles it makes a whistling sound.  The sound bothers the moles sensitive hearing.

Moles also do not like vibrating ground.  Place little windmills around the yard.  The vibrations drive them away.

Ronda, I've tried them all, to no particular success.  I've learned to live and let live.  After all, the moles were here first.  My gardens are about an acre and a half, including a large pond (60' by 110') and a 6000 square foot vegetable garden.  The moles are carnivorous and consume, primarily, worms.  A worse problem is voles.  They like to eat bulbs and root crops.

I haven't heard of this one... I'll give it a try... at the worst it's a way to recycle the glass bottles, since the garbage company doesn't include them in the curb-side program (I'm to lazy to take them to the recycling center)... I've tried human hair (the beauty salons look at you rather oddly... but we did have some success... also dog manure (if you have one... I wouldn't go around asking for it... the manure also helps the dog(s) from digging.... put the poop in the hole and cover)  I've also heard about chewing gum (Juicy Fruit to be specific... just can't figure out if I'm suppose to chew it first) It's suppose to mess up the mole so they can't eat...  Good luck!  Let me know if you've had any success... I've found that a little bit of all work to keep those moles on their toes

Debi,

I heard of the human hair one, but I didn't want to go to the salons and ask for it.  I hadn't heard about the Juicy Fruit or dog maure.  We have two dogs I should try that.  Thanks for the comment.

You bet!  I've also tried sinking a metal fence post into the ground and put an aluminum pop (or beer) can to catch the wind and vibrate down through the post... it worked okay (it was put in the garden and the soil isn't packed down real good so the sound didn't really reverberate through... also there was a thing sold at Costco called "Mole Chaser" - cant' find it anymore... I'd like to get more... anyway... it uses 4 D-cell batteries and makes a buzzing sound every few seconds.... we like it... but works best when the ground is wet (almost to the point of saturation...)  we've even done the pesticides to kill the larve that the mole eats (that kills the worms too... not a good idea, but if you've reached your wits-end... its an option) there are many things on the market... and when you touch the product (and you will; no matter how careful you are) putting it into the tunnel or where ever its used,  the moles will push it right back up.... to be truly honest... the best thing is an outdoor kitty.  Our moles have been reduced to one pesky one under my rosemary bush... but I live with it... keeps the soil airated for the plant...

It's been said that the best soil for planting is the soil pushed up by a mole.  It's loose and ready for planting.
