If you love pumpkins as much as I do, you don't want to miss the annual Pumpkintown, Pumpkin Festival held in (you guessed it) Pumkintown, South Carolina (35 minute drive from Greenville) at the old historic school house near the junction of Hwy 8 and Hwy 135 (take hwy 8 and turn right on hwy 135 then follow the signs). Nearly 40,000 people attended the event last year and another 5,000-10,000 newcomers expected to visit Saturday, October 11th. The very "hometown" style parade starts early at around 8AM, and the festival officially starts at 9am. Bring your lawn chair and set it up near the music stage. You can enjoy several local bluegrass bands, gospel singing and cloggers which will perform throughout the day. There will be kiddie rides for the youngsters. And, over 150 different homemade craft booths. Unfortunately, this pumpkin festival differs from the ones you will find in Virginia or California. There will NOT be any contests for biggest pumpkin, pumpkin decorating, nor will there be pumpkin shooting from giant catapults. BOO HOO. Likewise, you will not find the beautiful carved pumpkins lit up and displayed at night. I have put in my suggestions to start these traditions, and.....well, maybe next year? If you go to the festival, make sure you find the host and make suggestions for changes you'd like to see. Maybe if enough people request giant pumpkin contests and pumpkin catapulting we can make it happen! I also asked the hosts of this years event if there will be any pumpkin fritters, pumpkin cider or pumpkin soup, my absolute favorite. Sadly, pumpkin pie is the only pumpkin related food that will be served. But, the kids will be happy to learn there will be all the traditional fair foods like pizza, hotdogs, funnel cakes, snowcones, and icecream. So, if you're looking for something fun to share with the entire family, Saturday the 11th, head out to pumkintown with your appetite for fun. Festival ends at 6PM, the earlier you get there the better.
PS: If you've never had pumpkin soup, I suggest you try it. Talk about delicious. Email me if you'd like a recipee, or go on the internet to find numerous version of this great fall-winter soup.
