The City of Quincy is in negotiations with Honeywell Corp. to upgrade and modify all schools and municipal buildings. The improvements will consist of newer more efficient heating and lighting systems. There has been some talk of solar panels also being used.
After having an evaluation done, it was determined that the City would save approximately $600,000 per year in energy savings.
The legislature has recently passed legislation that allows communities the opportunity to save energy with these programs and pay for them with the savings involved. This eliminates the bidding process and saves money for the tax payers. The project will actually be paid for by the City with money saved on energy costs. This bill also allows for a longer pay back period.
Many other communities are watching Quincy, as well as, calling the City for more details, and many communities are expected to follow suit if all goes well in Quincy.
The City Leaders continue to take Quincy in the right direction.
Work Has Now Begun!
The first phase has begun and consists of a lighting study. Approximately 18,000 fixtures and bulbs are to be replaced with energy efficient units saving thousands of dollars per year in energy costs for the taxpayers of Quincy.
Water conservation programs are also being done at all fire stations throughout the city and the Police Station. Newer plumbing and fixtures are being installed to cut down on water and sewer consumption.
Some schools are having new roofs installed under this program. The City is allowed to do the work now, and pay for it with the money saved by the conservation efforts.
